Owls Walk it Off Against HSSU to Take the Series

FULTON, Mo.- William Woods University (20-18-1, 7-6 AMC) defeated Harris-Stowe State University (1-23, 0-14 AMC) by the score of 6-5 scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk it off against the Hornets.

Peyton Clampitt opened the top of the first inning allowing a single to centerfield off the bat of Hornet leadoff hitter Dwayne Daggs. Clampitt forced three ground balls to end the inning. The offensive production for the Owls was sparked in the first inning when Jacob McWhirter doubled down the right field line to score Matt Hanson. In the second inning Clampitt was able to strike out two of the four batters he faced, allowing a single and a fly out to Jack Niggemeier. The Owls were held off the board in the bottom half of the inning.

Both teams would scratch the scoring column in the third inning. Clampitt was able to retire the first batter of the inning before plucking the Hornet leadoff hitter. A strikeout by Devin Rader preceded a loud single off the bat of Tyson Dent. The Hornet slugger Julian Cintel, at the plate with runners on the corners, drilled a ball past the diving glove of Owls short stop Taylor Hopkins to score their first run of the game.

AJ Willenberg led off the bottom half of the third inning with a single right back up the middle. Freshman second baseman Colby Caton answered the call from third base coach Tyler Bracht and laid down a bunt to advance Willenberg into scoring position with the top of the order due up at the plate. Kaden Kinsler roped a line drive to centerfield with Willenberg rounding the third base bag to score. Willenberg was cut down at the plate due to an outstanding throw from centerfielder, Daggs. With two outs and one runner on the Owls looked to extend the inning. Niggemeier was able to draw a walk off the Hornet hurler. However, the highlight of the inning was a double over the head of the left fielder scoring both Kinsler and Niggemeier.

Clampitt retired the Harris-Stowe offense in order in the fourth inning only for the Hornet arm to give up one single and retire the next three batters. The top of the fifth inning was an eventful one for the Harris-Stowe offense as they scored four runs in the frame. The first run of the inning came on a single to first base scoring Fuller, while Daggs was called out advancing behind him. Two batters later, an error by the Owls gave up a run and loaded the bases to set the score at 3. Harris-Stowe slugger, Kyran Bacchus, was able to lift a ball out to centerfield for a single scoring two runs to give the Hornets a 5-3 lead.

The Hornet starting pitcher Dakota Gaines, was able to throw up three consecutive zeros keeping The Woods from developing anything on the offensive side of things. Peyton Clampitt continued his dominance through the seventh inning tallying 11H, 2ER, and 11Ks.

Facing a two-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Owls were up against Harris-Stowe closer Anderson Dotolo. The ninth-place hitter, Tyler Horton, was able to draw a walk to get the leadoff man on in the inning. Leadoff walks oftentimes come back to score, and this was the same in the seventh inning. Kaden Kinsler worked a favorable count and hammered a fastball over the right field wall to tie the game at five. Niggemeier was able to draw a walk to represent the winning run. Matt Hanson tripled to right field scoring Niggemeier and cementing an Owls win with the score of 6-5.
