BOLIVAR, Mo. - In a tuneup match before next week's AMC/Heart/SAC NAIA Qualifying tournament, William Woods (9-6) picked up a 4-2 win over NCAA Division II Southwest Baptist University (6-12) on Thursday.
Kristina Dimitrijevic picked up the match-clinching win at the three singles line for the Owls, winning 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 over Polina Paunova.
Hanna Lindeboom and
Marta Calvo Larraz clinched the doubles point for Woods with a quick 6-2 win over Elsa Pascual and Paula Ballesteros, as Southwest Baptist was unable to field a pairing at the three doubles line.
Lena Greefs and
Marcelina Kotylak were on pace to deliver a sweep of the doubles matches, leading 4-2, but their match was abandoned hoping to beat the inclement weather forecast.
With Woods leading 2-0 at the beginning of singles play due to a walkover at the six line, Greefs made the lead 3-0 as Pascual was forced to retire after Greefs took the first set 6-2.
Leticia Luis clawed the first point back for the Bearcats at four singles, downing Mireira Simon Sanchez 7-5, 6-3. Ballesteros was able to avenge her doubles loss in number one singles, outlasting Lindeboom 6-1, 6-4 to pull SBU within a 3-2 margin.
After taking the first set, Dimitrijevic saw the momentum in her match at the three line take a big swing as Paunova won four of the final five games in the second set and jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker third set. The Owls freshman responded with amazing poise, winning three straight to level the tiebreaker at 4-4, then closed it out with five straight points after trailing 7-5.
The Owls continue a bit further south, taking on Drury University in a reserve match Friday at noon.
