CREVE COEUR, Mo. - Solo home runs by
Kaden Kinsler and Kamron Morris were the lone bright spots on Saturday for William Woods (18-18-1, 6-6 AMC) against no. 12 Missouri Baptist (26-8, 11-1 AMC). The Owls lost both ends of the doubleheader, falling 8-2 in game one and 10-0 (7 innings) in game two.
"This weekend, we didn't take care of the baseball," said head coach
John Cavness. "We gave up 18 runs today and 15 were unearned. Defense wins games and we did not play it to our standard this weekend."
Kinsler's two-out shot in the top of the fifth looked promising for Woods, closing the game to a 3-1 deficit.
Jack Niggemeier followed with a double to left center, but the Owls couldn't keep the rally going as
Matt Hanson flied out to center.
After an inning-opening error led to a three-run bottom half by MBU, Morriss plastered a one-out shot over the fence, but the spark wasn't able to catch for Woods despite a two-out walk drawn by
Cade Irwin. MBU added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, but despite a one out walk to Kinsler in the top of the seventh, Woods couldn't rally.
The Spartans capitalized on a two-out error in the bottom of the first inning in a big way, as Jacob Kouneski hit a three-run homer to crack the game open.
Woods managed to briefly threaten in the top half of the fourth and fifth innings, but the Spartans put the game out of reach, plating five in the fifth and adding two in the sixth.
The Owls close out a home-and-home series against University of Saint Mary on Wednesday, with a 3 p.m. first pitch on the docket.
