HOLT'S SUMMIT, Mo. - In holding off a day two charge on the individual leaderboard from Lincoln University's Austin Shoemaker,
Spencer Worley helped WIlliam Woods claim its fourth straight tournament win by jumping five spots to claim the individual title at the inaugural Railwood Open hosted by William Woods University. Worley fired a five-under 67 on day two to finish with a 141 (74-67; -3) as WWU extended its first-day margin to capture a 13-stroke win over NCAA Division II squad. The Owls shot 584 (293-291; +8) over 36 holes to a 597 (304-293; +21) for the Blue Tigers.
Tom Gehring's 69 led Woods to an 11-stroke margin on day one, but the senior faltered slightly on day two, dropping to eighth overall with a finish of 146 (69-77;+2).
Brayden Buffington joined Worley in making up for the absence of
Aiden Asby on day two, however, turning in a two-day card of 145 (75-70; +1) and jumping into sixth.
Theo Brown rounded out the scoring for Woods with a 152 (75-77; +8).
The WWU 'B' team turned in a solid day two performance to climb into a fourth-place tie with Central Methodist University, with the Owls turning in a 634 (319-315; +58) to match CMU's 634 (316-318; +58), with
Evan LaPosha [16th-157 (79-78; +13)],
Reece McMurdo [18th-158 (82-76; +14)] and
Casen Glover [19th-160 (74-86; +16)] finishing in the top 20.
In the first collegiate tournament ever hosted by Railwood, Worley and Shoemaker both challenged the course record, with Shoemaker's 66 marking a new competition round low.
Next up for Woods is the Missouri Valley College Spring Invitational, with 9 a.m. shotgun starts on April 15 and 16.
