MOBILE, Ala. - After a rain delay in the morning pushed back the start time, no. 18 seed William Woods (11-7) wasn't able to find a rhythm against no. 15 seed Indiana Wesleyan (24-4) in its first round match of the 2024 NAIA Women's Tennis Championship, falling 4-0.
Mireia Simon Sanchez was a bright spot for Woods, as she held a 7-5, 4-1 lead over Breann Barger at the four singles when the match was clinched.
WWU's two doubles pairing of
Lena Greefs and
Marcelina Kotylak won their first game against Barger and Maria Way, but the Wildcats duo rallied for three straight to turn the momentum en route to a 6-2 win.
Hanna Lindeboom and
Marta Calvo Larraz were also derailed by a three-game swing at the one line, falling 6-2 to France Antenna and Sofia Munoz.
Simon Sanchez was the only first-set winner for Woods, taking a 7-5 win at the four line. Kotylak tried to put together a comeback at six singles, but the Wildcats were able to clinch the match win first.
The Owls finish the 2023-24 season with an 11-7 overall record.
