Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Rounding out its four-game season-opening road swing against the second top-10 team in as many matches, William Woods (1-1-2) put up a strong battle against no. 6 Bethel (2-0-1), but was unable to overcome a first-half goal, losing 1-0.
"I'm proud of our team for the way we competed this afternoon," said head coach
Tommy Nienhaus. "We had plenty of chances to score but just couldn't capitalize. We proved to everyone that we are a force to be reckoned with and we're going to keep getting better."
The Owls came out and pressed the attack early, with three chances in the opening quarter-hour.
Charlie Williams had a solid chance in the third minute that went wide to the left.
Nico Martinez Labra was inches away from a wonder strike for Woods in the 11th minute, as he forced a turnover and then found space at the top left corner of the 18-yard-box. His curling right-footer held up tantalizingly in the wind and ricocheted off the top right corner of the goal.
Bethel managed a goal against the run of play in the 15th minute as Manuel Garcia dribbled to the endline and wriggled loose from his defender. His shot snuck under
Matthew Dworak and trickled into the back post.
Woods didn't shy away from chasing the game, outshooting Bethel 12-7 on the afternoon, but the Owls were unable to find the net.
WWU is set to make its North Campus Athletic Complex debut this Friday, hosting Central Methodist University in a split doubleheader. The Owls battle the Eagles at 4 p.m., before WWU's women host Westminster at 7 p.m.
