Box Score LAWRENCE, Kan. - Sparked by
Pamela Durazo's team-high 10 kills and co-team-high eight digs, William Woods (8-6) won its fourth straight match, beginning its three-game weekend with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 sweep of Haskell Indian Nations University (4-11) Friday at Coffin Sports Complex.
En route to earning their fourth sweep this season, the Owls tallied 37 kills, a .202 hitting percentage, five aces, three blocks, 35 assists and 55 digs, while the Indians had 28 kills, a .100 hitting percentage, six aces, no blocks, 27 assists and 48 digs.
"Today, we were able to do some different things with our lineup and try some new things," William Woods volleyball coach
Kandace Cook said. "While we didn't play as clean as we hoped, we did our jobs and walked out with the win. Tomorrow, we take on some big teams and we couldn't be more ready!"
Outside of Durazo, standout Owls were
Lorenza Lagana, who matched her career-high and led the team with two aces,
Juliana Neves with a team-high 15 assists,
Lauren Adams with a co-team-high eight digs and
Vitoria Campos Mello with a match-high two blocks. Haskell outside hitter Mikeya Sheppard was an all-around threat, with a match-high 13 points as she finished with a double-double of 17 digs and 11 kills - both match-highs - but the Indians didn't do enough as a team to keep it close.
In the first set, Woods never trailed, going up by its widest margin at 17-8 after
Andressa M. Borges put down a kill provided by
Madelyn Ashton to cap a set-high 4-0 run. The Owls hit .233 with 12 kills and five errors in set one, and Haskell had a .176 hitting percentage with 11 kills and five errors.
Although the Indians went up by as much as five points at 15-10 in the second set, WWU played well when it mattered most. Tied at 21, the Owls concluded the set by scoring four unanswered points to extend their advantage to 2-0.
Luciana Paiva Pereira spearheaded that WWU run with a kill – her third and final kill of the set - and a block for the final two points.
Putting their best foot forward, the Owls went on their two most extended runs in the game-deciding third set as Haskell didn't go in front by more than a point, 9-8 in the last instance. After that lead change in the Indians' favor, WWU posted six unanswered points, with
Erin Treis tallying two,
Juliana Neves one assist, and Adams, Durazo – gave the Owls the lead for good – Campos Mello and
Marissa Solverud a kill.
William Woods' 6-0 third set run put it up 14-9, though Haskell answered by scoring three points with no reply to cut it to a 14-12 Owls advantage. A pair of Brazilians and WWU assist leader Treis answered the bell, furthering the Owls' cushion to 19-12, with Campos Mello recording three kills assisted by Treis and Lagana back-to-back aces. Following that, the Indians narrowed their deficit to two, but WWU didn't let them get any closer as it opened its weekend with a sweep.
Wrapping up their weekend road trip in Kansas, the Owls face host (RV) Ottawa University (4-4) at 10 a.m. and Dickinson State University (3-7) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Ottawa Tournament.
