FULTON, Mo. - Owls junior shot-stopper
Sierra Hahn had a memorable Saturday, posting her first college clean sheet and win as William Woods (3-3-3) beat Ottawa University (0-4-0) 1-0 at North Campus Athletic Complex.
Heading into the contest off of back-to-back losses in which they conceded more than a goal for the second and third time this season, the Owls knew they needed to stick to their bread and butter of playing stout defense. Woods did just that, holding its opponent off the scoresheet for the fourth time this season while outshooting the Braves 13 (six shots on goal) to six (three shots on goal).
Although WWU's five shots in the first half were three more than Ottawa's tally, it didn't find the back of the net. It stayed that way through 15 minutes of second-half action until
Maddy Schrader changed that and joined Hahn in having a statistical first as an Owl.
Taking a pass from the 2023 Class 1 Missouri High School Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year,
Macie Parmer, Schrader slotted her shot into the net to make it 1-0 William Woods. The goal-assist combo between the two Columbia natives was the match decider.
Hahn (1-1-0) made three saves in her winning effort, and Braves goalkeeper Te'A Newcomb (0-1), who, in her first college start, didn't concede a goal when they were down to 10 players for the final 17:09, took the loss and stopped a career-high five shots in six attempts.
The Owls have a week to prepare for their next match, as they head down to Clarksville, Ark., to take on NCAA Division III University of the Ozarks (2-1-1) at 3:30 p.m. next Saturday at Wilson Athletic Complex. The Owls are 3-0 against the Eagles, winning 3-1 in their most recent meeting on Sep. 10, 2022, in Fulton.
