CREVE COUER, Mo. - It didn't take long for
Mariyah Brumley to etch her name into the (RV) William Woods University women's wrestling record book, becoming the second Owl to win a tournament championship as she placed first at 235 pounds in the MBU Open, her first college competition, hosted by (RV) Missouri Baptist University Friday at Carl & Deloris Petty SRC.
"We are coming off a long break, and we got to see what we have been working on come to light for some," William Woods wrestling coach
Jacob Lorentz said. "The sport of wrestling is tough, so steady improvement and growing is key. I think we demonstrated that against the stiffest competition we have faced this season. To place here is saying something, as last year we didn't have a place winner at this event. This year, we had two, a champion and fifth, so we are happy with that. Definitely more work to do, as it's a process, but I'm happy with our growth this season."
Brumley, a freshman from Lebanon, scored 18 points with three pinfalls and a forfeit win. To put herself on the first-place podium, Brumley posted a :39 pin of No. 13 Baker University's Emmale Americano in Round 1, a 1:54 pin of NJCAA No. 1 Indian Hills Community College's Kennedi Washington, ranked fourth at 235 in the NWCA NJCAA weight class rankings, in the quarterfinals, a 1:31 pin of Indian Hills' Shaniayha Wysinger, ranked fifth, in the semifinals and won by forfeit over NCAA Central College's Selena Snell in the first-place bout.
Teani Medeiros-Maielua, ranked 19th at 124, also placed for the Owls, moving up a weight class and taking fifth at 131 with 12 points - two pinfalls and a decision victory. Opening the day with back-to-back wins by fall, Medeiros-Maielua pinned Baker's Zoey Kessler in 2:24 and NCAA Quincy University's Kaleigh Allender in :37. In the fifth-place match, Medeiros-Maielua won by a 9-4 decision over Baker's Aileya Sath.
William Woods (0-8, 0-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference) will host Heart opponent No. 2 Grand View University (7-1, 2-0) for its first dual of 2025 at 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at Anderson Arena in Fulton.
