Box Score OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Host, No. 18/No. 8 seed William Woods University women's tennis competed in the first match of the 2025 ITA NAIA National Team Indoor Championship, and the Owls fell 4-0 to No. 1/No. 1 seed Georgia Gwinnett College - winners of the last eight NAIA National Championships - in the quarterfinals Friday at Overland Park Racquet Club.
"The girls had a tough match today, but I was very proud of them for the way they conducted themselves and fought for every point," William Woods tennis coach
Abigail Lemberger Hughes said. "I saw a lot of great things in each match, and I think we can take these things into tomorrow. I think the girls have a great opportunity to try to cause an upset tomorrow, and I'm excited to see how they compete."
The Grizzlies took the doubles point, winning at the two and three slots. In No. 2 doubles, the Owls'
Kristina Dimitrijevic and
Sophia Hausner lost 6-1 to Alexandra Melnikova and Elizabet Verizova. And WWU's
Chloe Hecker and
Charlotte Ready dropped a 6-1 decision to Justine Lespes and Cherysh Henry at the three line.
Georgia Gwinnett earned the sweep, with wins in four through six singles. Woods'
Samya Sikand lost 6-1, 6-0 to Diana Ilie in the four slot, Hausner lost 6-1, 6-0 to MaryLove Edwards in the five spot and Hecker fell 6-0, 6-2 to Isid Hernandez at the six line.
Although they lost, the Owls are guaranteed two more matches over the next two days, taking on No. 7/No. 5 seed Southeastern University in the consolation semifinals at 8 a.m. Saturday.
