PARKVILLE, Mo. – The William Woods women's basketball team battled the Park University Pirates (5-5, 1-4 Heart) Saturday afternoon but came up just short on the road, falling to the Pirates 64-62.
William Woods (1-8, 1-5 Heart) found their rhythm in the first quarter behind 9 points from
Jersee Wren as the Owls would gain the lead late in the first quarter with some stand-up defense. Heading into the second quarter, the Owls were all tied up 19-19.
The Owls would keep it close in the second quarter, as the Pirates continued their offense to start the quarter. Wren led the scoring for the Owls, with
Mya Pflasterer grabbing 4 boards in the second quarter.
The Owl went into halftime down just 1, 36-35, looking to gain back their early lead in the second quarter.
At the start of the third quarter,
Mariah Prince would lead the scoring for the Owls, regaining their lead over the Pirates. With her 8 points, the Owls would go into the final quarter down just 5 to the Pirates, looking to get their second consecutive win.
Woods kept fighting as the Pirates would continue to trade points with the Owls, not allowing the gap to close. Prince and Wren led the scoring charge in the fourth quarter as they grabbed a lead early in the quarter. Despite the fight of the Owls, Park would pull out the last-second win over the Owls 64-62.
Owls get some time to regroup as they will head to Cedar Rapids to face Mount Mercy University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
