#20 Owls’ Sikand Earns Singles Point in a Marathon Defeat at Drury

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - In a match that lasted seven hours - a break between doubles and singles included - No. 20 William Woods University's (0-4) Samya Sikand won a singles point as the Owls lost 6-1 to NCAA Division II Drury University (3-4) Sunday at Cooper Tennis Complex.

The Owls dropped all three doubles contests as the Panthers Antanina Novik and Ana Luisa Sathler Rosa beat WWU's Kristina Dimitrijevic and Sophia Hausner 6-0 at the two-line in the first completed matchup, then Eliza Verstappen and Eliana Weichel won 6-4 over Zara Littlejohn and Sikand at the three-slot and Ewa Samberger and Leana Chanove defeated Hanna Lindeboom and Mireira Simon Sanchez 7-5 at the top spot.

Drury won the first three singles matches to secure a team win and increase its lead to 4-0. Simon Sanchez dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Chanove at the two-line in the first completed singles matchup. Following that, Lindeboom, No. 13 in the ITA NAIA singles rankings, fell 7-5, 6-0 to Samberger at the one-slot, and Littlejohn lost 6-0, 6-1 to Eliana Weichel at the six-spot.

Sikand gave the Owls their lone point, beating Sathler Rosa 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) at the four line in the fourth finalized singles contest.

The Panthers won the two remaining singles matchups: Dimitrijevic lost 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) to Novik in the third slot, and Hausner lost 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) to Verstappen in the fifth slot.

William Woods hosts Freed-Hardeman University (1-3) in its home opener next Sunday at Suzanne Neal Memorial Tennis Complex in Fulton. It'll be an excellent opportunity for the Owls to win their first game this season, holding a 4-0 lead in their all-time series against the Lions, including a 7-0 sweep last season on March 29 in Fulton.
