JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.- The Owls offense was unstoppable today as William Woods (3-2) tallied 22 runs on 12 hits to defeat NCAA Division II opponent Lincoln University (0-4). Sophomore standout Kaden Kinsler drove home 10, as Peyton Clampitt shut the door on the Blue Tiger Offense.
"Offensively, it was good to see guys take their walks and execute with runners in scoring position. Kinsler showed us, today, what he is capable of doing day in and day out." said Owl's head coach John Cavness. "Peyton Clampitt gave us five strong innings on the bump, which put us in a good spot to win that game."
The Woods struck paydirt first as Jared Bendfeld doubled down the left field line clearing the loaded bases to take a 3-0 lead. After Bendfeld advanced to third on a wild pitch, he was brought home by left fielder Nolan Reichers to advance the Owls lead to 4-0. Peyton Clampitt had a near perfect first inning setting the Owls up for the top of the second.
The Owls hammered home four runs in the inning, all scoring on a no-doubt grandslam from centerfielder Kaden Kinsler. Justin Dameron, Colby Caton, and Ryan Retone scored on the blast. William Woods scraped across two more runs in the top of the third inning, when AJ Willenberg's bunt led Nolan Reichers to score and Kaden Kinsler's bases loaded walk brought home Willenberg.
This scrappy William Woods bunch tallied 3 more runs in the fourth inning, before exploding for 6 runs in the top of the fifth. Justin Dameron's double to centerfield brought home Jared Bendfeld, who reached base on a base hit to start the frame. Owls second baseman Ryan Retone barreled a ball to the right side that scored Nolan Reichers from third. The big story of the inning was Kaden Kinsler's second grand slam. On a 2-1 count with the bases juiced, Kinsler caught a fastball at the belt and launched it well over the right field wall to bring home Dameron, Retone, and Jackson Kirn tallying his sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth RBIs on the day.
Owls' hurler Peyton Clampitt shut the door on the LU Blue Tiger offense. The southpaw racked up eight K's, on one hit, through his five innings of work. The Blue Tiger Offense was able to bang home eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, though only three of which were earned.
William Woods responded with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Kaden Kinsler's double down the line scored Jude Gremillion, who pinch hit for Jackson Kirn earlier in the inning drawing a walk. Pinch hitter Brenden Rochelle hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Tyler Horton, who pinch hit for the DH slot in the frame, to bring Wood's lead to 21-8. The last run to cross the plate in the game was Kaden Kinsler scoring on a pass ball, cementing the Owls win at 22-8 in the seven-inning short game.
The Owls are back in action tomorrow for a double header against the Blue Tigers at historic Vivion Field in Jefferson City. First pitch is scheduled for noon, weather permitting. To stay up to date on the latest gametime information stay tuned to wwuowls.com.
