Box Score HANNIBAL, Mo. - Going 3-1 on its four-game road trip, William Woods University (10-13, 8-9 American Midwest Conference) wrapped it up with a 62-43 rout over Hannibal-LaGrange University (3-20, 0-17) Saturday at Mabee Sports Complex.
The Owls had strong showings from their one and two, with one
India Atkins finishing a point away from a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds, nine points (one 3-pointer), two steals and one assist and two
Peyton Dearing tallying a co-team-high 10 points, a game-high five steals, three boards and one assist. And
Sydney Booker had an all-around great game with a co-team-high 10 points (3-5 field goals and 4-4 free throws), six rebounds and one assist.
Not only did William Woods get buckets from its starters, but it also did from its rotation. The Owls outscored the Trojans 18-0 in bench points. Guiding WWU's effort were
Katie Keilholz with a game-high two 3-pointers to account for her six points and
Layla Young with five points (2-4 field goals and 1-1 free throws).
Another facet the Owls executed in was points off turnovers, notching 16 points from 20 forced turnovers compared to HLGU's three from 12. In just 1:56, WWU surpassed the Trojans' points from turnover total, taking a 4-0 lead off of two layups from turnovers; Dearing scored the first basket from her steal and
Mariah Prince got her shot to fall off an Atkins pickpocket.Â
The Trojans responded with a 4-0 run of their own to tie it at 4. Then, the Owls took the lead for good at 7-4 on Atkins' 3-pointer with 6:07 left in the first quarter. That triple started a 10-2 WWU run; Keilholz concluded the stretch with her first make from deep to make it 13-6 Owls with 2:57 left in the first. From there, HLGU outscored WWU 3-2 to end the quarter as the Owls held a 15-9 advantage heading into the second quarter.
In a low-scoring second quarter, The Woods outscored HLGU 14-5. The Owls took their first double-digit lead (25-14) five minutes before halftime thanks to a Dearing coast-to-coast layup from her steal.
Ruthie Brown came off the bench and put a bow on the first-half scoring with 3:13 on the clock, hitting a putback to put it at 29-14 William Woods.
Fighting back, the Trojans cut their deficit to single digits on Candice Dowell's 3-pointer, which made it 32-24 Owls with 7:14 left in the third quarter. HLGU narrowed it to a single-digit contest two more times before WWU went up by double digits the rest of the way on
Jersee Wren's jumper that increased its lead to 41-30 with 2:46 remaining in the third quarter. That started an 8-2 Owls run to end the third quarter, Atkins' layup from her defensive board capped it and brought the score to 47-32 WWU.
During the middle of the fourth quarter, the Owls had a 10-2 run in which Keilholz knocked down her second 3-pointer with 4:26 left. Following that, Young had a three-point play, and Wren converted a layup to seal the stretch and make it 59-38 WWU with 2:32 remaining.
Brooklyn Dougherty sent the last shot into the hoop, landing a 3-pointer with 1:11 to go to secure a 19-point Owls win.
William Woods collected 34 rebounds (11 offensive) with 11 second-chance points and shot 38.3% (23-60) from the field, 25% (6-24) from 3-point range and 76.9% (10-13) at the free-throw line. Hannibal-LaGrange had 28 boards (seven offensive) with seven second-chance points and converted 31.1% (14-45) from the field, 25% (3-12) from deep and 75% (12-16) at the charity stripe.
The Owls begin their third straight three-game week in the regular season's penultimate week, hosting Cottey College (15-8, 11-6 AMC) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Anderson Arena in Fulton. WWU dropped the first matchup against the Comets this season, 70-48, on Jan. 28 in Nevada, Missouri.
