Owls Sweep Day 1 vs HLGU

FULTON, Mo.- In an offensive explosion, William Woods (16-9, 9-5 AMC) tallied 31 runs in their double-header against American Midwest Conference foe Hannibal-LaGrange University (3-13, 2-12 AMC). The Owls swept the Trojans on the day, moving the all-time series to 41-14.

Game one saw The Woods offense put up 13 runs on nine hits in the seven-inning contest. The Trojans were first to strike the scoring column, putting up a run in the top of the first inning. After keeping the Owls off the board in the bottom half of the frame, Hannibal-LaGrange had all the momentum in the game.

The potent Woods' offense, coming off a 17-run outing against the University of St. Mary one day prior, proceeded to score in every inning for the rest of the contest. The Owls plated four in the bottom half of the second inning, one in the third inning, three in the fourth, four in the fifth inning, and their last, lone run in the sixth.

In game one, Woods hammered home three doubles, five singles, and a home run. Third baseman Colby Caton provided the big bat for the offense smacking two doubles and bringing home five runs in the contest. But it was left fielder Cade Irwin who launched the long ball deep over the right field wall in the bottom of the third inning. Irwin, a senior from The Colony, Texas, has been very comfortable in the box recently hitting .478 over his last nine games with nine runs scored. William Woods tallied ten walks to accompany the nine hits on the day propelling them to a 13-6 victory in game one.

The offensive onslaught continued for game two of the day as The Woods came one short of their season high runs total for 18 runs in the contest. The Owls used a ten run third inning to claim the lead and cement their second win of the series. In the frame William Woods earned eight free passes and knocked in a pair of singles and a pair of doubles.

16 Woods' hitters stepped to the plate in the contest racking in 13 hits and eight walks in the game. Leadoff hitter Ryan Retone led the way with 3 RBI, as the entirety of the offense saw success in the day. Cade Irwin, Brendan Rochelle, Jared Bendfeld, Cam Casso, Tyler Horton, and Grant O'Haver all drove in two runs apiece.

On the other side of the ball, Woods struck out 10 batters in the game and scattered five hits through seven innings. Starting pitcher Keith Piepmeier led the way with five strikeouts over his five innings of work, while bullpen arms Wyatt Fischer and Carson Prescott tallied three and two k's respectively in their lone innings of work.

The Owls won 18-4, taking a 2-0 series lead heading into Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Owls field as Woods looks to win the series.
