Box Score FULTON, Mo. - A 4-hour and 35-minute postponement didn't bother William Woods University (2-3, 2-3 Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference), ending a Friday full of flag football with a weather delay mixed in at North Campus Athletic Complex by earning the program's first shutout win and winning streak with its 26-0 triumph over Midland University (2-3, 1-1).
Those weren't the only firsts the Owls achieved Friday as
Kennedy Vannoy recorded their first punt return touchdown, a 79-yard score, covering all but one yard of the 80-yard field. That was one of two touchdowns on the night for Vannoy, as she caught four passes for 43 yards and one touchdown at wide receiver.
William Woods quarterback
Makenzie Hicks completed 19-37 passes for 209 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Joining Vannoy in catching touchdown passes from Hicks was
Evonne Bruestle with seven receptions for 81 yards and one touchdown and
Addie Chilek with three catches for 22 yards and one touchdown.
Chilek also had a great game defensively, posting three tackles and two interceptions with 19 total return yards. Woods'
Emma Anderlik tied Madison Jones for a team-high five tackles and tied
Jayden Jalbert for a game-high two pass breakups.
The Owls needed their defensive dominance as they scored all the game's points in the second quarter. WWU tallied its 26 points on Vannoy's 79-yard punt return touchdown and Hicks' 1-point pass conversion with 10:31 left in the second, Hicks' 4-yard pass to Vannoy and 1-point pass conversion with 7:16 to go, Hicks' 11-yard pass to Bruestle, who lateraled it to Chilek, who took it to the house with 3:26 remaining and Hicks' 33-yard lob to Bruestle with 1:31 on the clock.
For the game, the Owls totaled 207 yards of offense (209 passing yards and -2 rushing yards), scored three passing and one punt return touchdown, intercepted two passes for a school record 19 return yards and had three penalties for four yards. The Warriors recorded 145 yards of offense (135 passing yards and 10 rushing yards), intercepted two passes for 11 total return yards and posted four penalties for 19 yards.
"We put out an all around team effort that came out on our side," William Woods flag football coach
Joe Schlager said. "The girls really wanted this game, and they earned it. We lined up and made them try to beat us, and we made stop after stop defensively. Midland made some big plays offensively, but we bounced back consistently and played really solid defense all night."
William Woods is back at it for two more Saturday, hosting KCAC foes Southwestern College (3-2, 3-2 KCAC) at noon and Bethel College (0-3, 0-3) at 3 p.m.
"On to the next with little rest - two games Saturday versus conference foes, followed by another pair of games Sunday," Schlager said. "One game, one play at a time."
