ST. LOUIS, Mo.- The Owls (13-9, 7-5 AMC) finish out day two strong, sweeping the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State University. With these wins, Woods extends their win streak against the Hornets to 12 in a row, averaging just under 8 runs a game.
"Our team did a good job finishing the series strong." said head coach John Cavness. "We needed our offense to pick us up today and they did just that from top to bottom."
The Woods offense scored 24 runs total on the day, tallying 11 in game one and 13 in the second contest. The Owls jumped on the board early, taking a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. Woods scored another run in the top of the second to grow the lead to three. The offense exploded for the Owls in the fourth inning, when four players scored in the frame. Camron Casso led the inning off with a lead off single into centerfield. Following the base hit, Ryan Retone popped a ball over the head of the Hornet second baseman to put runners on first and second with no outs. Sophomore infielder Colby Caton drew a four pitch walk to load the bases for Owls' slugger Kaden Kinsler. The centerfielder from Elsberry, Mo., lifted a long fly ball, well out of the stadium, for a grand slam growing The Woods lead to seven runs.
William Woods was able to plate a lone run in the fourth before scoring three runs in the top of the sixth inning to set an 11-0 scoreline going into the bottom half of the frame. The Hornets were able to take advantage of three singles and a double in the inning, scoring two runs. Harris-Stowe plated one more run in the seventh inning, cementing an 11-3 victory for the Owls.
In game two, the Owls tallied eight total hits and 13 runs in the contest. Woods, again, scored the first runs in the game as they brought home three in the top of the first inning. In the inning, all nine hitters stepped to the plate combining for one hit and five free passes. Harris-Stowe answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first.
After a scoreless second inning, Woods scored five runs in the third inning. 11 hitters stepped to the plate in the inning, five were walked, with a double and single thrown in the mix. East Central College transfer Jackson Kirn brought home the first run of the inning for the Owls on a double that scored lead-off hitter Jared Bendfeld. Freshman Camron Casso plated two on a full-count, bases-loaded single to right field.
The Owls offense scored another run in the fifth inning off the bat of Jackson Kirn who singled to right field bringing home Jared Bendfeld. Harris-Stowe exploded for eight runs in the bottom half of the frame, totaling five singles and three doubles bringing 13 Hornets to the plate in the inning.
In the top of the seventh inning, Woods avoided extra innings for a second straight day scoring four runs in the inning. Two-way player Vincent Pyeatt earned the victory for the Owls on the mound as Woods wins 13-9.
Catch the Owls back in action on Wednesday in Leavenworth, Kan., against the University of St. Mary Spires. This is the Owls first mid-week matchup of the season, taking a break from AMC Conference play ahead of their series against Hannibal-LaGrange University. First pitch is at 3 p.m. in Leavenworth on Wednesday, with a 1 p.m. start against Hannibal-LaGrange at home on Friday.
