Woods Wacks the Fastball, Sweeps Day One vs UHSP

ALTON, Ill.- In a late start for an AMC weekend series, William Woods (22-15, 15-11 AMC) opened up their four-game series against University of Health Science and Pharmacy (13-25, 8-18 AMC) at Lloyd Hopkins Field in Alton, Ill., on Sunday afternoon. Woods, coming off a series split with the Mustangs from Central Baptist College, looked to improve their American Midwest Conference standing with just three series left on the season.

In a lopsided 9-3 victory in game one, the Owls offense continued to grow on the season tallying 12 hits over the seven-inning contest. Sophomore Colby Caton continued his dominance at the plate driving in six runs on three hits to lead the Owls past the Eutectics.

William Woods and UHSP traded three run innings in the third, with the Owls barreling five singles in the top half. Caton tallied his first RBI of the game on a bases-loaded single to right field, scoring Noah Shepherd's courtesy runner Vincent Pyeatt. Returning it where he found it, Kaden Kinsler barreled a fast ball back up the middle to score Ryan Retone and true freshman Camron Casso to take a three-run lead.

The Owls answered back in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs in the frame. Colby Caton's triple down the line in right field scored Pyeatt and Retone. Caton would then come around to score on the same play due to a UHSP miscue that grew The Woods' lead back out to three runs. William Woods tallied three more runs in the sixth inning, with Sean Goings tallying his first RBI of the game on a line drive to center field that brought in Jackson Kirn who was entered into the game as a pinch runner for Cade Irwin who singled to lead off the inning. With the bases loaded, and two outs, Caton again came through for the Owls' offense notching his third hit off the game to bring in Pyeatt and Casso.

Woods' ace Max Benton finished out the game with four clean frames, only having one blemish in the third inning. Benton, a native of Clyde River, Prince Edward Island, tallied five strikeouts and scattered seven hits in his complete game win on the bump. The Owls took game one 9-3, looking to earn their first double-header series opener sweep since Hannibal-LaGrange on March 13th.

In game two, the Owls found themselves in the hole early facing a 4-1 deficit after the second inning. Woods responded by scoring two runs in the top of the third inning, with a run crossing the plate on a bases-loaded double play and another crossing on a triple that was launched over the head of the Eutectic right fielder off the bat of Kaden Kinsler.

William Woods opened up the scoring in the fourth inning, plating four in the top half of the frame. Casso brought home the first run of the inning on a single to left field, followed by a two-RBI single from Caton to take the lead. Kinsler's two-out base knock tacked another run on the board for the Owls setting the score at 7-4.

The Eutectics were able to scratch three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to even the score. The Owls scored two more runs over the next three innings, giving up a lone run in the sixth. Carrying a 9-8 lead into the bottom of the seventh, Woods needed just three outs to take the double-header sweep. UHSP was able to take advantage of an errant throw, to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

The game stayed deadlocked at 9 until the tenth inning. Kinsler led off the away half of the inning with a four pitch walk to spark the Owls offense. On a first pitch fastball, left fielder Cade Irwin smashed a longball over the wall in right field to take a two-run lead.

Owls' closer Carson Prescott, already in his third inning of work, looked to shut the door on the UHSP offense. Prescott retired the Eut leadoff hitter on a one pitch groundout to shortstop Casso for out number one. The next batter doubled down the line in right field, followed by a single to center field to bring the winning run to the plate for University of Health Science and Pharmacy. In just four pitches, Prescott was able to retire the Eutectic three hole and cleanup hitter to carry the Owls to an 11-9 extra inning victory.

Woods finishes the series tomorrow, Monday, April 7th, with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m.
