BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The William Woods (8-19, 5-14 Heart) University Owls fell on the road Wednesday night to Baker University (11-16, 9-10 Heart), 82-79.
William Woods came out ready to compete, trading baskets early in what turned into a fast-paced first half. The Owls found success offensively, knocking down shots from the perimeter and attacking downhill to keep the Wildcats on their heels. Despite the strong start, Baker used a late push in the second quarter to take a 41-33 lead into the break.
The Owls responded in the third quarter with one of their strongest stretches of the night. William Woods tightened up defensively and began to control the tempo, turning stops into transition opportunities. The offensive rhythm continued to build as the Owls poured in 46 second-half points, erasing the halftime deficit and setting up a tight finish down the stretch.
With the game tied in the final minutes, both sides executed under pressure. Baker capitalized on key possessions in the closing moments, converting at the free-throw line to narrowly hold off the Owls' late comeback attempt as the Owls would fall 82-79.
Jacob LaBounty once again shined for the Owls with 26 points and 7 rebounds,
Michael Brooks II chipped in with 10 points.
Owls will look to end their season strong for their final game in Anderson this season as they host Mount Mercy for Senior day for at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
