MEMPHIS, Tenn. - William Woods Lacrosse journeyed to Memphis in preparation for two neutral site matches, the first of which coming against Tennessee Wesleyan University. Similar to their opening contest, the Owls struggled to find the net on offense, scoring just 7 in a loss to the Bulldogs.
Unburdened by the eventual trajectory of the game, the Woods displayed an eagerness from the first whistle. Just over two minutes into the first quarter, the Owls struck gold first, coming off an unassisted goal by
Ethan NewMyer on a rather successful night for the senior attacker. At the 9:00 mark, NewMyer was able to was able to zip a shot past the Bulldog goalie again, this time off of the assist from
Jack Brackin, putting WWU up 2-0 early on Tennessee Wesleyan.
William Woods' early scoring output was briefly interrupted by a Bulldog goal, before continuing with another unassisted goal by NewMyer at 7:08, earning the Omaha native a hat trick halfway through the first period. Unfortunately for NewMyer and the Owls' offense, however, it would be his last score of the night. TWU would rattle off seven straight goals from the end of the first quarter to early in the third, putting the Bulldogs up 8-3.Â
Yet, the offensive momentum from Tennessee Wesleyan was not enough to put the Owls down for good. Freshman
Joey Weingardt responded with the second goal of his young career off the assist from
Connor White, and senior
Xavier Dockery found the net off the NewMyer assist, bringing the Woods within three entering the fourth period. Momentum was beginning to shift back in favor of the Owls at this point.
Connor White opened the fourth with a goal in just 45 seconds, flashing his attacking skills with no assist required. Despite the momentum, though, the Bulldogs attack proved victorious this night. TWU would score five more times, separated once by another unassisted White goal, bringing the final score to 13-7.
Freshman
Zach Hearn saw his first collegiate start in goal for the Owls, playing all 60 in the contest and saving 10 shots.Â
William Woods falls to 0-2 to begin the season. The men will be back in action in Memphis once again tomorrow, Feb. 28th, for a 12:30 p.m. start against Webber International University.
