Fulton, Mo. -- A 19-point outing from
Jonathon Nutt (Palmyra, Mo.) wasn't enough for the William Woods University men's basketball team to finish off the comeback against Harris-Stowe State University on Thursday night, as the Owls dropped a 71-61 result to the Hornets in AMC play.
The Owls scored first in the contest, but the Hornets quickly responded and opened up a six-point lead. WWU reeled Harris-Stowe back in, pulling to within 16-17 with 9:35 to play in the half, but the visitors were able to extend and take a 25-35 lead into the locker room.
A 16-3 run would pull the Owls to within one, as Nutt and
Andrew Miller (Whangamata, New Zealand) combined for 13 of the Owls' 16 during the run, with each also dishing an assist. WWU would continue to hang around, eventually leveling the contest at 55-55 with 6:13 to go.
But just as quickly as the Owls had narrowed the gap, an 11-2 run pushed the margin back to 57-66, and William Woods wasn't able to pull any closer down the stretch.
In addition to Nutt's 19,
Logan Decker (Kansas City, Mo.) added 13 points on the evening as the Owls shot .386 from the floor and .368 from distance. The Hornets had three players in double-figures, led by Terry Hollins's game-high 21 points. Wayne Brown added 16 and Donald Davis notched 14 for HSSU, who finished the evening hitting at a .448 pace and a .500 rate from 3-pt range.
WWU has a bye from AMC action this Saturday, hitting the road next Thursday to take on Missouri Baptist. Tipoff for the game is set for 7:30 p.m.
