Owls Pick Up 4-3 Win Over Ashford

FULTON, Mo. -- Behind a pair of strong performances at the plate including a two-RBI double from Derek McCawley (Phoenix, Ariz.) in the bottom of the third, the William Woods University baseball team picked up its first series win of the year with a 4-3 win over Ashford University. The Owls took three of four games from the Saints over the weekend, and move to 4-2 on the year.

Ashford was able to get on the board first, pushing across a pair of runs in the top of the second, but WWU responded in the bottom of the inning with one. McCawley led off the inning with a bloop single over the head of the Ashford shortstop, with a one-out grounder to second from Matt Thomas (Brashear, Mo.) moving him to second. Newly-crowned AMC Player of the Week Chris Fletcher (Moberly, Mo.) plated McCawley with a single through the infield.

In the top of the third, McCawley would do the driving, as his two-out double pushed across a pair of runs for the Owls, who added an insurance run in the sixth on a Jacob Harrison (Fulton, Mo.) single.

The Saints posted a single run in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3, with neither team able to light the scoreboard in the eighth. Sean Sanders (Oklahoma City, Okla.) finished off the game for the Owls, retiring the side.

McMorris picked up the win for WWU, going 6.0 innings in the outing. He struck out four and allowed just one walk. Sanders picked up the save for the Owls, while Tim Elias was charged with the loss for Ashford. The Owls head to Pittsburg, Kan., next weekend for tournament action. The Owls will open up against Waldorf College on Friday at noon.
