ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Fresh off his recognition as AMC Pitcher of the Week,
Adam Brush (Ashland, Mo.) picked up his fourth win of the season, scattering three hits over the nightcap as the William Woods University baseball team defeated Harris-Stowe by a 7-1 margin to pick up a series split and move into a second-place tie with Park University. The Owls dropped the opening game of the doubleheader 4-7.
The Owls found themselves down early in the opener, giving up two runs in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the second, with Harris-Stowe adding one in the fourth.
William Woods narrowed the deficit to 2-6 with a short rally in the top of the sixth, but the Hornets were able to notch one in the bottom of the sixth. WWU tried to mount a rally in the top of the seventh, but were only able to grab two runs back.
Jon Hecht (Frohna, Mo.) took the loss for WWU.
In the nightcap, the Owls found the going a bit easier behind a solid outing from Brush. The sophomore hurler struck out 10 and allowed just two hits through the first six innings as WWU opened up a 7-0 lead. The Owls picked up doubles from
Parker Watkins (Wardell, Mo.),
Brian Carr (Phoenix, Ariz.),
Derek McCawley (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Robert Butvin (Mantua, Ohio) in the game.
The lone run scored by HSSU in the game came off a seventh-inning home run by Brett Nelson.
With the split, William Woods moves to 19-9 on the season and 5-3 in AMC play. The Owls sit three games back from league leaders Missouri Baptist, whom WWU will host in a Friday/Saturday series. First pitch for the series is set for 1 p.m. on Friday, March 30 at Owls Field.
