CANTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against Culver-Stockton College on Monday afternoon.
Ashley Deckard scored in the sixth minute for the Owls, but the Lady Wildcats were able to equalize in the 11th minute. Neither side was able to break the deadlock, however, giving each team its first draw of the year.
WWU pressed much of the opening attack, with Deckard forcing a save from Mackenzie Little in the third minute of the match.
The sophomore would not be denied in the sixth minute, however, scoring her second goal of the season off an assist from
Jordan McNamara (Blue Springs, Mo.). The Owls earned a free kick in the offensive third, with Deckard able to settle the service from McNamara and slot the ball past Little. The goal marked the first scored on the Lady Wildcats in the the 2012 season, ending a span of 504:12 without conceding.
C-SC equalized on its first chance of the game, as the ball popped loose at the top of the penalty area. Brittany McMahon collected the ball and put it past
Kelly Abernathy (St. Charles, Mo.).
Abernathy picked up back-to-back saves in the 15th and 16th minute to keep the score knotted at 1-1. The junior came up big for WWU throughout the match, recording 12 saves on the afternoon, including one in the first minute of overtime.
Although WWU was outshot on the afternoon 22-17, the Owls would have the best chance to win in regulation, as
Brittainy German (St. Peters, Mo.),
Haley Pipes (Edmond, Okla.) and
Jamie Palermo (Santa Fe, N.M.) each forced a save from Little in the final 10 minutes of regulation.
The Owls move to 2-3-1 on the year and return home on Saturday, September 22. William Woods plays host to in-town foe Westminster College with kickoff set for 5 p.m. The game is a White Out Night, presented by White Dog Promotions.
