Owls Drop An Overtime Heartbreaker To Ottawa

FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's soccer team saw its three-match unbeaten streak snapped on Saturday as they fell 1-0 to Ottawa University. Kelly Abernathy (St. Charles, Mo.) picked up five saves in the losing effort for WWU.

Neither team was able to put together much of a real threat in the first half, as WWU mustered just one shot on goal in five efforts. Ottawa only put three of its seven shots on frame in the first stanza.

The second half would see WWU pressure the Ottawa goal, albeit unsuccessfully, as the Owls forced three saves from Erin Stengel.

As regulation wound down, Ottawa would press the attack, but Abernathy came up huge on two occasions to keep the match drawn 0-0. As the 89th minute opened, the Braves pushed the attack down the left side of the pitch and played a ball across the goal to an open back post runner, but the junior keeper was able to scamper across and make the unorthodox save, stopping the ball between her legs.

The Owls keeper would come up big as the 89th minute wound down, cutting out a breakaway opportunity for Ottawa as well.

Neither team put a shot on goal in the first extra period, but the Braves were able to strike in the 109th minute for the win.

The loss drops the Owls to 4-4-1 on the year. William Woods returns to Firley Field on Wednesday, October 3, hosting Harris-Stowe State University in a return to American Midwest Conference action. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m.
