Owls Look To Extend Winning Streak Against Lyon College

McNamara is tied for the team in goals with 11 and first in assists adding nine.
FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team looks to keep its hot-streak going on Saturday afternoon, as they wrap-up its regular season home schedule with a match against American Midwest Conference for Lyon College. Kickoff for the match, presented by State Farm, is set for 3 p.m.

William Woods (8-6-1, 5-1-1 AMC) comes into Saturday's matchup on a season-high three-game winning stream. During the streak, the Owls have defeated AMC foes Williams Baptist College, Stephens College, and Freed-Hardeman University. WWU has been dominant during the stretch, as they have outscored those three teams by a combined score of 21-1, and have outshot those teams 163-9.

Lyon College (8-5-0, 3-4-0 AMC) started the 2013 season on a five-game winning streak, but since has went 3-5. Most recently, the Scots tied Hendrix College 1-1, outshooting Hendrix 31-9 in the game. Monica Ayala scored the tying goal in the second half for the Scots.

Game Notes

Hunting For A Cure
The Owls will be playing for a former participant on the team who has Hodgkin's lymphoma. In honor of the previous player and other Hodgkin's lymphoma patients, the team will be wearing camo jerseys with purple numbers and Owls lettering which is the color to support awareness for Hodgkin's lymphoma.

There will be plenty of events going on during halftime of the women's game, which includes a 50/50 raffle. All proceeds from the events at halftime will go towards Hodgkin's lymphoma patients and research.

Last Regular Season Home Game
Saturday will mark the last regular season home game for the Owls this season. William Woods has played 11 game at Firley Field this season, and so far are 5-4-1 at home this season.

The Owls have not lost a home game since Sept. 21 when they lost 1-0 to Missouri Valley College. Since then, they have went 4-0-1 at Firley Field.

Dominating Streak
The Owls recent three-game winning streak is due in large part to junior college transfer Rachel Meyer. The forward has posted three consecutive two-goal performances to help William Woods climb over the .500 mark for the first time since early September.

The recent outburst of goals has allowed Meyer to tie Jordan McNamara for the team lead in goals with 11.

Limiting Opposing Offenses
William Woods has allowed just one goal in its last three matches. The Owls collected back-to-back shutout victories against Williams Baptist and Stephens College. Freed-Hardeman was able to put the first goal on the Owls defense in the second half of Tuesday's 3-1 victory.

During the streak, WWU held its opponents to just nine shots, five of which were on goal.

Goal Outburst
Since being shutout 3-0 at Columbia College on Oct. 8, William Woods has collected 21 goals to spark the to a three-game winning streak.

Rachel Meyer leads the team in goals during the stretch with six, while Jamie Palermo and Jordan McNamara have each collected four goals over the last three games.

Strong Comeback
Senior goalkeeper Kelly Abernathy's return has been a big lift for the Owls defense. The goalie saw her first game action since Aug. 31 in last Saturday's 9-0 win over Williams Baptist on senior day.

That afternoon the senior collected the 10th shutout of her career. She was credited half a shutout the next day, as she kept Stephens College off the board for a half in the 9-0 victory.

Team Leaders
Jordan McNamara and Rachel Meyer are tied for the team lead in goals with 11. Meyer has collected six goals over her last three games, while McNamara has tallied four scores in her last three matches.

McNamara also leads the team in assists with nine. The sophomore has handed out four assists in her last three games.

National Rankings
William Woods has scored the fourth-most goals in the NAIA with 58, and passed out the sixth-most assists with 44.
McNamara's nine assists is the 14th-highest total in the country, while her 11 goals are tied with teammate Rachel Meyer for the 43rd-most in the nation.

Knowing Your Opponent – Lyon College
The Scots come into Saturday's match in sixth in the AMC with a 3-4-0 record. Overall on the year, Lyon College is 8-5-0 on the year. Most recently, Lyon dropped a 3-0 decision at second place Columbia College. It was the second time in three games that the Scots have been shutout.

Lyon College is an evenly distributed bunch when it comes to scoring, as they have three players that have scored six or more goals. Monica Ayala's eight goals leads the team, while Maria Alonzo is one off her pace with seven. Ayala has struggled in conference play, by scoring just one goal in five games. While Alonzo collected a hat trick against Stephens College.

Defensively, the Scots have allowed 15 goals on the year. In conference play, Lyon College has giving up six goals in seven games, three of those coming in the 3-0 loss to Columbia College.

Series At A Glance
The all-time series is tied at 2-2 going into Saturday's match. William Woods collected a pair of victories over the Scots last season, including a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory during the first round of the AMC Tournament.
