PARKVILLE, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's soccer team scored a key American Midwest Conference victory on Wednesday night as they collected a 2-0 victory against Park University.
William Woods (9-7-1; 6-2-1 AMC), who is still searching for home field advantage in the first round of the AMC Tournament, took a big step in the right direction by earning a 2-0 win at Park University (7-7-0; 7-2-0 AMC) on Wednesday night.
WWU now moves into a fourth place tie with Hannibal-LaGrange University. The Owls trail Park and Missouri Baptist University by a half game with one match remaining for all three squads. William Woods will control its own destiny as they travel to Missouri Baptist on Saturday. With a win the Owls would secure home field advantage in the tournament's first round.
Jordan McNamara got the Owls on the board in the 23rd minute. The sophomore received a pass from Rachel Meyer behind the Pirate defense, but was able to stay onside to put a shot inside the left post, giving WWU a 1-0 lead. It was a team-leading 12th score of the year for McNamara.
William Woods got stellar defensive play for the remainder of the half to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
In the 58th minute Park University made a crucial error, as Rachel Meyer was fouled inside the 18-yard box, which awarded the Owls a penalty kick. Coach Randy Hall went with junior Jamie Palermo to take the kick and she buried the shot to extend WWU's lead to 2-0.
The Owls were able to maintain a clean sheet for the remainder of the game to take the 2-0 win. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Abernathy picked up her second shutout on the season and made three saves to keep the Pirates from scoring.
William Woods will close out the 2013 regular season on the road with a critical AMC matchup against Missouri Baptist University on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
