Owls Open 2013 Against Northwestern Red Raiders

FULTON, Mo.- The William Woods University baseball team gets their 2013 season under way in Topeka, Kan., in the Lake Shawnee tournament this weekend and will be looking to improve on their 2012 36-19 (14-10 American Midwest Conference) record.

The team squares off today  and tomorrow against Northwestern College, as the Red Raiders finished last season with a record 30-23. Northwestern returns 14 overall letter winners, including eight who have earned all-conference recognition.

In 2012, the Red Raiders and the Owls met with William Woods winning game one 8-3 and game two 10-1. In game one, leadoff hitter Jordan Thompson led the way offensively going 2-4 with one run scored and two RBI. The senior second baseman ended last year with a .304 batting average and will be looked upon to get on base at the top of the order.

In game two, the Owls were led on the mound by Jon Hecht, as the hurler threw five innings of four hit ball, allowing one run and striking out six. Offensively, WWU put six runs on the board in the bottom half of the first inning, putting the Red Raiders too far behind to catch up in the end. Senior Jacob Harrison swung a hot bat that day, going 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.

William Woods starts off their 2013 campaign today at 1:00 p.m. and this is the first game on the season for the Red Raiders as well.
