FULTON, Mo.- In their final day at Topeka, Kan., the William Woods University baseball team split their double-header against Ashford University, falling in game one 4-1, however, winning game two 18-4.

In game one, the Owls grabbed an early 1-0 advantage on a RBI from Robert Butvin that scored senior Greg Hamrock. However, in the bottom of the sixth, the Saints put three runs across the board and added one more in the seventh for the three run victory. Hamrock led the way offensively going 2-3 with two doubles. Junior hurler Dane Smith took the mound, however, suffered a tough loss, allowing just four hits and three runs over six innings of work.

Game two was a different story, as the Owls dominated the Saints offensively totaling 20 hits and scoring 18 runs. William Woods held a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, which is where the next two innings the Owls broke the game open. The team scored eight in the fifth and added four more in the sixth, going on for the 14 run victory.

Ryan Schuermann got the win allowing three runs, on seven hits, while not walking any Ashford batters. Plenty of William Woods players had a great day at the plate including leadoff hitter Jordan Thompson, going an astounding 4-5 with two stolen bases and two RBI.

Catcher Derek Fletcher went 2-4, hitting his first home run on the season, adding four runs batted in. Zach Nichols, Eilert Meyers and Jacob Harrison combined to go 7-9, with five runs batted in, two stolen bases and three runs scored.

The Owls extend their record to 2-2 on the season and will be back in action on Friday in Joplin, Mo., in the 2013 Joplin Tournament. First pitch will be thrown at 4:00 p.m. against Waldorf College.
