FULTON, Mo.- The William Woods University baseball team is heading to Batesville, Ark., to take on the College of the Ozarks in a double-header starting at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, after the entire Joplin Tournament has been cancelled.
The team was supposed to play four games this weekend, however, due to the weather conditions mother nature had other plans. Also, the Owls were scheduled to play in Pittsburg, Kan., tomorrow but conditions were still unplayable, so Arkansas is now where College of the Ozarks and the Owls will meet.
It will be exactly one week since the Owls were in action, back in the Lake Shawnee Tournament, where the team went 2-2. WWU looks to build off their final game in the tournament, where the Owls scored 18 runs on 20 hits, led by leadoff hitter
Jordan Thompson going 4-5 with four runs scored and two RBI.
Derek Fletcher and
Zach Nichols combined to go 4-7, with eight runs batted in and three runs scored.
Ryan Schuermann got his first victory on the season, going four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while walking none.
Thompson leads the team offensively batting .636 going 7-11 in three games played, adding two doubles and two RBI. Nichols and
Eilert Meyers are also batting .600 on the early season, combining to go 9-15 and seven RBI. Four other Owls are batting over .300 on the 2013 year.
The Bobcats are off to a good start this season, with a record of 5-2, winning four of their first five games, including going 3-0 over Lindenwood University-Belleville. The team recently played Williams Baptist splitting the double-header defeating the Eagles 3-1 in game one, however, falling in game two 10-5.
Three of the Bobcats starters are batting over .300, led by Trevor Bowling, batting .409 and totaling four RBI. The power so far this season comes from Tyler Lopez, whom is hitting .367 with one home run and nine runs batted in.
