Owls and Bobcats Split Series in Arkansas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FULTON, Mo.- After the Joplin Tournament had to be cancelled, the William Woods baseball team headed down to Arkansas with the College of the Ozarks for a double-header.

The Owls won game one 4-2, thanks in part to a strong bottom of the first inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Jordan Thompson and Jacob Harrison got things going with back-to-back hits and the Owls were in business having runners on second and third.

Greg Hamrock came to the dish next and grounded out to short, however, that allowed Thompson to score, giving WWU a 1-0 lead. After Zach Nichols was hit by a pitch, Eilert Meyers hit a single, allowing Harrison to score and giving William Woods a 2-0 lead.

Derek Fletcher added one more RBI, scoring Meyers, giving the Owls a great start leading 3-0. In the top half of the second, COFO got on the board with two runs on two hits, cutting the Owls lead down to one. In the bottom of the third, Hamrock led the inning off with a single and was able to advance to third after a wild-pickoff attempt by Bobcat starter Joel Harrington. Two batters later, Meyers hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Hamrock to score and giving the Owls a two run lead.

With Adam Brush on the mound, the Bobcats couldn't get anything going offensively after the second inning, as Brush allowed two runs on four hits and striking out one in five innings, getting his first win on the season. Matt Thomas came on in relief and got his second save on the year, throwing two innings of shut-out ball, allowing one hit and striking out four.  Meyers led the way offensively, with two runs batted in.

In game two, Dane Smith pitched a complete game, however, the offense couldn't get much going for him, as the Owls fell 2-1, splitting the series. Each team just managed a total of five hits, and the lone Owls run came in the top of the fifth, as Stephen Kohler scored on a passed ball. Justin Elmore and  Kohler each chipped in two hits at the plate.

The Owls record moves to 3-3 overall on the early season, and since tomorrow's games against Central Methodist are cancelled, the team is back in action on March 1st in Union City, Tenn. The team will face Mid-Continent at 11:00 a.m. and Indiana Tech at 1:30 p.m.
