Box Score FULTON, Mo.- The William Woods men's basketball team lost a heart-breaker in the final seconds to Williams Baptist on the road in the American Midwest Quarterfinal game, as the Owls fell 70-68.
The first half started out very well for the Owls, with the team going 4-of-4 from the floor, taking a 12-2 lead, thanks to
D.J. Hoskins chipping in six points early. The team continued to hold a decent lead, up 28-18, after
Blake Burgess knocked in a three pointer with 7:36 left on the clock.
The Eagles, however, got back into the game going on a 7-0 run in 3:00 minutes, capped off by a Maurice Templeton two pointer, making things very interesting near the end of the half. For the final 5:15, both teams traded lead changes and the Owls were able to take a 36-35 advantage with .19 seconds left, after Hoskins knocked in two free throws.
Chase Norwood and the Eagles drove fast down the court and on Norwood's shot he was fouled by
Roy McElroy, which allowed Norwood to drain both free throws, giving Williams Baptist a 36-35 lead at the half. Hoskins a Peoria, Ill., native led the way with 14 points, while Kyle Harvey led the Eagles with eight points and five rebounds.
The Eagles came out on fire from the floor in the first 5:00 minutes of the second half, going on an 11-4 run taking a 47-39 lead. It continued to be a back and forth match-up, with William Woods continuing to try and cut down the Eagle lead. The team did just that, as
Seth Thomas tied the game up at 59-59, after hitting a two point shot, the first tie of the half and third of the game.
Then
Jonathon Nutt made his field goal the next time down, giving the Owls a 61-59 lead, their first lead since there was .19 seconds left in the first half. From the 5:38 mark till 3:00 minutes left in the game, there was one tie and four lead changes.
The Eagles were clinging to a 66-65 advantage, but then Nutt hit a huge three-pointer, giving the team a 68-66 lead, with 2:29 remaining in the AMC Quarterfinal. The Owls played tough defense, but couldn't hold off Williams Baptist from tying the game up, as Harvey drained a two pointer and was fouled on the play, with .26 seconds left. However, Harvey who had a game high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting, missed his free throw shot, which kept the game all square at 68-68.
William Woods then went down the court and
Logan Decker looked to nail a three-pointer, but missed his shot attempt and the Eagles grabbed the rebound with .08 second left on the clock. The Eagles got the ball in play and LaCharleston Tumblin was able to knock in a two point shot, giving WBC a 70-68 lead with .03 left. The Owls had one more chance, however, a turnover by
Roy McElroy ended the game and the William Woods season.
The team had five players in double-figures led by Hoskins with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting and added four rebounds. Senior
Daniel Armah was a threat on both ends of the floor, ending his night with 14 points and 13 rebounds, 11 of which were on the defensive side.
Logan Decker and Nutt each chipped in 10 points. Besides Harvey, Zabian Sanders scored 14 points and Phillip Sykes was the final player to reach double-figures, chipping in 10.
The Owls end the season with a 13-17 overall record and will lose the senior services of
Daniel Armah,
Logan Decker,
D.J. Hoskins and
Roy McElroy. The team returns plenty of quality players and along with the newcomers, will continue to be a threat in the American Midwest Conference 2013-14 season.
