Thomas Leads Owls with Three Home Runs in Sweep of Harris-Stowe

Thomas hits three home runs over the right field wall all in consecutive at-bats.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FULTON, Mo.- The William Woods baseball team swept Harris-Stowe today 9-1 in game one and 11-0 in game two (7 innings). Matt Thomas stole the show on the afternoon, going 3-for-3 with three home runs and three runs scored.

Coach Darren Munns was pleased with his pitching performance today and over the weekend. “We threw strikes, got ground balls and fly ball outs so it was a good showing by our staff,” said Munns. John Cavness got the ball in game one and was very strong in his outing and looked to continue the scoreless streak of 16/innings pitched that Adam Brush and Dane Smith started on Saturday against the Hornets.

The Owls were holding a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, and that is when the team broke the game open, scoring four runs on two hits and were helped out by two HSSU errors, taking a commanding 5-0 lead. In the inning, Eilert Meyers, Robert Butvin and Jordan Thompson (2) each contributed RBI in the inning.

The team went on to add three more runs in the fourth and one in the sixth, taking a 9-0 lead heading into the seventh. At the top of the seventh, Cavness was still rolling and he was able to extend the scoreless streak up to 22/innings pitched, however, Logan Peters grounded out to second, scoring Alex Mancillas who led off the inning with a double, ending the streak. The Cassville, Mo., native was able to finish off the game with a ground-out and a strike-out, moving the Owls win streak to three in a row.

In his complete game outing, Cavness allowed just one run on seven hits and struck out four Hornet batters, needing just 84 pitches. The offense totaled nine runs on nine hits, with Greg Hamrock and Mike Vinnitsky each contributing two hits and two runs scored. Beside Thompson's two RBI, Jacob Harrison, Derek Fletcher, Meyers, Butvin and Stephen Kohler each added an RBI.

Game two turned out to be the same story, as the Owls scored 11 runs on 15 hits, going on for the shut-out victory led by starter Jeremy Ahillen and right fielder Matt Thomas. The southpaw from Huntley, Ill., made his second start on the season and was dominate, allowing just three hits and striking out one over seven innings.

The team scored three runs in the first, two in the second, one in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth for the victory. Eight out of nine batters in the Owls lineup, had at least one hit in the game. Thomas was the star of the show, homering in the third, fifth and sixth, all of which went over the right field wall.

Coach Munns was happy that Thomas and the offense were able to find a rhythm at the plate. “He is a good hitter and was able to get some good swings on the ball. It was good to see the offense get going and we look to carry it over into the weekend,” said Munns.

The 3-4-5 hitters of Nichols, Vinnitsky and Fletcher combined to go 6-for-11 with two runs scored and six RBI. Hamrock continued to swing the hot bat, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored at the leadoff position and #9 hitter Stephen Kohler went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Owls are above .500 on the season at 9-7 (5-1 AMC), and are riding a four game winning streak. The team will now travel to second place Missouri Baptist in a big conference showdown on Friday and Saturday. First-pitch on Friday will be thrown at 12:00 p.m., with game two to follow shortly after.
