Box Score 2 FULTON, Mo.- The William Woods baseball team extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 6-2 game one victory over No. 16 Lyon College, however, the Scots spoiled the Owls series sweep, as Lyon took the finale 6-2.
In the home half of the first inning,
Zach Nichols got things going with a two out single to center and he was able to score on a
Matt Thomas triple down the right field line, to make it 1-0 Owls.
Jacob Harrison came to the dish next and ripped a single to center, scoring Thomas making it 2-0.
Ryan Sweet reached base next on a wild throw, allowing Harrison to score and at the end of one inning of play, the team was up 3-0.
The Scots responded in the top of the second, with Will Lindsey singling to center, scoring Bryan Lynn who led the inning off with a double. Lyon added another run in the top of the third on starter
John Cavness, and heading into the bottom of the third, it was 3-2 WWU.
Stephen Kohler and Nichols led off with back-to-back singles, and were able to move up to third and second base after a ground out by Thomas. Harrison then reached on a walk, loading up the bases for
Ryan Sweet. The designated hitter forced a walk, scoring Kohler and extending the lead back up to two runs.
Eilert Meyers then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Nichols, making it 5-2 Owls. During the
Derek Fletcher at bat, Sweet took off for second base in hopes of getting in a run down and allowing Harrison to score, but the catcher's throw down to second was wild and that allowed Harrison to score from third and make it 5-2 William Woods after three innings of play.
Cavness was able to keep the Scots offense quiet, as the freshman went six one-third innings pitched, allowing two runs on eight hits and struck out six.
Matt Thomas came on in relief and picked up the save, and giving the Scots their third consecutive loss which is their longest losing streak all year.
The offense totaled six hits, led by the 3-4 hitters of Nichols and Thomas who combined to go 4-for-6 with three runs scored and one RBI.
In game two, the Owls again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Sweet hit a double to right, scoring Kohler who reached on a bunt base hit. This time, the Scots responded in a big way scoring four runs on five hits in the top of the second, putting William Woods in their biggest deficit all weekend.
The team, however, chipped away at Lyon's lead, scoring in the third and the fifth innings, making it a one run game after five innings of play. The Scots put the game away, scoring one run in the sixth and the seventh, taking a 6-3 lead, the Owls added another run in the eighth, but the 12 game winning streak came to an end, as the team lost by two runs.
The Owls totaled eight hits in game two, led by Sweet going 3-for-4 with one RBI. During their season high 12 game winning streak, the team outscored their opponents 131-59 and had a team batting average of 0.379, with 10 batters batting over 0.300.
William Woods (24-15, 18-8 AMC), will look to start a new winning streak as they are back in action in a make-up double header against Benedictine-Springfield. First-pitch is set to be thrown at 1:00 p.m.
