Owls Sweep Bulldogs In Double Header; Brush Moves Into First All-Time In Wins

Brush moves into first all-time in career wins at William Woods earning his 19th career victory.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2  FULTON, Mo- After taking three of four games from No. 16 Lyon College, the William Woods baseball team swept through Benedictine-Springfield in a make-up double header, taking game one 9-6 and game two 8-4.

When the game was postponed last month, the Owls held a 4-3 at the top of the third inning and the team extended their lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the third, as Derek Fletcher singled that scored Jacob Harrison who reached base earlier in the inning on a bunt base hit.

Adam Brush came out to pitch in the top of the fourth and his day did not start how he wanted, as he gave up three runs on two hits, and the Bulldogs were able to take a 6-5 lead. The Owls responded as after Stephen Kohler reached on a walk, Zach Nichols doubled to left, scoring Kohler and tying the game back up at 6-6.

After allowing three runs in the fourth, Brush settled down allowing no runs or hits the rest of his outing and totaled five strikeouts. The Owls offense put the game away for good, scoring three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 9-6 lead. Matt Thomas came on in relief of Brush in the seventh inning and picked up his seventh save for the three run win for the team.

With his win against the Bulldogs, Adam picked up his 19th career victory which is now an all-time school record in wins, breaking the previous mark of 18 held by Zack Lamb since 2002. The offense totaled 11 hits, led by the 1-3 hitters of Greg Hamrock, Kohler and Nichols who combined to go 7-for-10 with four runs scored and four RBI. Thomas, Fletcher and Eilert Meyers added the other RBI for the Owls.

The offense jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game two, getting RBI from Thomas, Ryan Sweet (2) and Austin Clapp. The Owls added one run in the second, third and two in the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead for starter Garret Haslag. The hurler was able to cruise through five innings pitched allowing just three hits, but his shut-out came to an end in the top of the sixth as Jared Klay hit a two run homer to left field.

After allowing another base hit, Coach Darren Munns relieved Haslag who pitched very well throwing five two-third innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out two. Trevor Manis came on in relief and got out of the inning, keeping the score at 8-2.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the seventh, but reliever Thomas kept the game from getting out of hand as he pitched one and one-third inning pitched allowing just two hits. Zach Nichols who came on to pitch the ninth, which was his first appearance all season on the mound and he shut down the Bulldogs, securing the victory for the Owls.

The offense totaled eight hits with Nichols (2-for-5) and Justin Elmore (2-for-5) each scoring once and Elmore tying for the team lead in RBI with Ryan Sweet (2). Hamrock, Kohler, Thomas and Clapp each chipped in an RBI.

The Owls (26-15, 20-8 AMC), end the American Midwest Conference regular season with 20 wins and will now play in a non-conference double header against Benedictine College at 3:00 p.m. and Missouri Valley College at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
