SPRINGFIELD, ILL. -- The William Woods University baseball team fell just short of winning the 2013 American Midwest Conference Tournament as they lost to Benedictine University at Springfield 9-7 in the AMC Championship game on Tuesday afternoon.
William Woods (29-17) could not capitalize on a 13-hit day, as they stranded nine runners on base in the high scoring affair to Benedictine University at Springfield (24-24). Pitching was also an issue on the day, as a group of nine Owls hurlers allowed nine runs on 13 hits.
The Bulldogs, who defeated WWU 6-5 in 11 innings earlier on Tuesday, jumped on the board first in the game, as they plated three runs over the course of the opening two innings to take a 3-0 lead going into the third frame.
William Woods would get on the board in its half of the third inning, as Justin Elmore and Greg Hamrock started the frame off with back-to-back doubles, giving the Owls their first run of the day. The scoring didn't stop there, as Zach Nichols was able to get Hamrock in from third on a sacrifice fly, pulling the Owls within one at 3-2.
The Owls took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning, as Austin Clapp and Elmore drove in a run a piece. The lead was short lived, because in the bottom of the inning the Bulldogs were able to scratch across the tying run, and then took the lead back in the fifth inning with a David Maziarz RBI.
Clapp got his second RBI of the game in the sixth inning as he singled home Ryan Sweet, tying the game at 5-5. Elmore also picked up his second RBI of the game in the next at-bat as he doubled in Jordan Thompson to give the Owls the lead back at 6-5.
A Travis Combs three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth allowed Benedictine University at Springfield to regain its lead back at 8-6, a lead they would not relinquish.
Each team would push a run across the plate in the seventh inning, before both sides shutdown each other as the Bulldogs won the AMC Tournament 9-7.
