SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- A late William Woods comeback goes for not, as Benedictine University at Springfield scores in the top of the 11th inning on a wild pitch to force a deciding game two in the American Midwest Conference Championship Series.
William Woods (29-16) battled back from a two-run deficit in the bottom of the ninth inning, as they were able to tie the game with a Greg Hamrock sac fly, to force extra-innings. But in the 11th, the Owls were done in by a wild pitch that allowed Benedictine University at Springfield (23-24) to score the 6-5 victory.
William Woods wasted no time in getting on the board, as they scratched across three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Greg Hamrock and Stephen Kohler each worked a walk to start the game for the Owls. Zach Nichols fly out flied out in as BenU-Springfield recorded the first out. Right fielder Matt Thomas followed Nicholas by cranking a three-run home run giving the Owls a 3-0 lead.
Adam Brush cruised through the first three innings as he held the Bulldogs hitless, but in the top of the fourth Travis Combs tagged him for a home run, giving Benedictine University at Springfield its first run of the day.
The home run ended Brush's day, as Jermey Ahillen came in to face the next batter, Tommy Jennings. The Bulldog third basemen doubled down the left field line off the Owls southpaw, bringing the tying run to the plate. The next batter, Brett Jackson, hit a two-run homer to tie the game at 3-3. Ahillen would retire the follow batter, and then gave up a single, ending his day as Damon Adrian came in the game to record the last two outs of the fourth inning.
Neither squad put up a real scoring chance until the seventh inning, when Derek Fletcher led off the bottom half with a single. Ryan Schuermann came in to run for the catcher, as Eilert Meyers bunted him to second with one out. Ryan Sweet was called upon to pinch-hit for Austin Clapp, but he would ground out to third, holding the runner. Jordan Thompson had a chance for a two-out RBI, but he flied out to center, stranding the runner at second.
