FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's soccer team tries to get back its winning ways as they face Lindenwood University-Belleville for a Sunday afternoon match. Kick-off for the game, presented by Joe Machens Dealership, is set for 4 p.m.

William Woods (2-2) suffered an 8-1 defeat to Culver-Stockton College on Tuesday night. Senior Katie Shikles scored her first career goal to give the Owls an early 1-0 edge. But they would be all they could manage as the Lady Wildcats posted eight unanswered goals to hand WWU its second defeat of the year.

Lindenwood University-Bellville (1-4-1), who will be entering the American Midwest Conference next season, is coming off a 4-1 loss to Principia College. The Lynx were held scoreless for their third game on the year. The lone victory on the year came against Culver-Stockton on Sept. 7, as they defeated the Lady Wildcats 3-2. Cydney Robertson scored her first career goals in an LU-B uniform, as the Maryville University transfer found the back of the net twice in the victory.

Game Notes

Ending a Home Stand (Sort Of)
Sunday will mark the end of the five-game home stand for William Woods to open the season. So far, the Owls are an even 2-2. Though their next game is on the road, it will be played against crosstown rival Westminster College. The Owls will return home on Sept. 21 to take on Missouri Valley College. That game will mark the seventh straight game played inside Fulton, Mo., to start the year.

Another Career First
On Tuesday senior Katie Shikles scored her first career goal in an Owls uniform. Shikles, who has appeared in 17 games for the Owls, has been primarily used as a defender in her two-year career, yet this season she has played some up top for WWU.

Shikles became the third player to score their first career Owls goal this season. Junior transfer Rachel Meyer and sophomore Desiree Strief each tallied their first career goals in the 4-3 win over Spring Hill College.

Wide Margin
The 8-1 defeat to Culver-Stockton marked the second time this season that William Woods has suffered a loss by six goals or more. The Owls dropped the season opener to Avila University 7-1.

In their losses the Owls are giving up an average of 7.5 goals per game. While in their wins, they are allowing just one goal per game.

After A Loss
Since 2010, the Owls an 11-8-3 in games coming after a loss. This season, William Woods is a perfect 1-0 in games after coming off a loss. WWU defeated Spring Hill College 4-3 after being defeated by Avila University in the season opener.

The last time William Woods dropped back-to-back games in the same season came last year in early October. The Owls were defeated 2-1 by Columbia College on Oct. 9, then again four days last against Hannibal-LaGrange University.

First Career Goalie Appearance
With senior goalkeeper Kelly Abernathy already out due to injury, freshman goalie Brittany Griffin had to step in. Yet on Tuesday, Griffin had to leave the game because of an injury and that forced sophomore Annie Graber to play goalie.

The Aspen, Colo., native allowed two goals in 13 minutes.

National Rankings
Sophomore Jordan McNamara's three assists ranks as the 46th-highest total in the country. Her assists per game ratio is even better, as the Blue Springs, Mo., native's 0.75 assists per game ranks as the 32nd-best average in the NAIA.

As a team, William Woods is average 2.21 assists per game. A mark that is the 31st-highest average for a team in the nation.

Thomas tallied both of her goal on the year against Missouri Baptist, while Robertson's two scores came against Culver-Stockton. Thomas added an assist against Trinity International, giving her a team-high five points.

Lindenwood University-Belleville has had a tough time scoring all season, as they have been shut out in three games this season, most recently against Principia College their last time out.
