Box Score FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University women's soccer team fell victim to a pair of early goals, as they dropped a 2-1 decision to Lindenwood University-Belleville on a wet and soggy Sunday afternoon that saw a stoppage of play due to lighting.
With injuries to their only two goalkeepers on the roster, William Woods (2-3) was forced to play junior
Jamie Palermo between the posts. It was the first time that the Santa Fe, N.M., native had ever played the position. She faired quite well after a shaky start, as she held the Lynx scoreless for the final 71 minutes of play.
Lindenwood University-Belleville (2-4-1) didn't waste any time to test the Owl's new goalkeeper, as they scored in the third minute. Devan Rivali got behind the WWU defense and scored past a diving Palermo, giving the Lynx a 1-0 lead.
The Lynx struck again 16 minutes later, as Kayla Thomas scored her team-high third goal of the year to take a 2-0 lead.
Right after the Lindenwood-Belleville scored its second goal, lighting struck, forcing the game to be delayed for 30 minutes.
William Woods came out of the delay on a strong note, as they strung together a couple of passes to get behind the Lynx defense.
Jenna Vogt scored her first collegiate goal off a perfectly placed ball from
Jordan McNamara in the 25th minute. It was the fourth assist on the year for McNamara.
From that point the Owls could not get another good look at the goal, as Lindenwood-Belleville played astounding defense for the final 65 minutes as they collected the 2-1 win.
The Owls will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to crosstown rival Westminster College. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m.
