Box Score FULTON, Mo. -- An early onslaught of goals helped the William Woods University women's soccer team to its first American Midwest Conference win of the season, as they defeated Benedictine University at Springfield 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's win snaps William Woods' (4-5-0, 1-0-0 AMC)two-game losing streak, as the Owls collected a pair of goals in games first nine minutes, to help spark them to the three goal victory over Benedictine University at Springfield (2-8-0, 0-3-0 AMC).
Ashley Deckard collected her second goal on the year in the seventh minute after corralling a cross in the box from
Jamie Palermo, giving the Owls an early 1-0.
Two minutes later, Palermo tallied her second goal of the year as she was able to vend off a BenU-Springfield defender and put a shot past a diving goalkeeper. The Santa Fe, N.M., native was able to score after a string passes from
Jessica Varner and
Jenna Vogt, helping set up the goal.
The Owls would strike again in the 20th minute, as
Jenna Vogt posted her second goal of the 2013 season off a Varner cross. The goal gave the freshman a career-high three points on the day, while Varner posted her second assists on the afternoon.
William Woods added its fourth goal of the half in the 40th minute, as
Brooke Hendrix's shot cleared the goal line and gave the Owls a 4-0 lead going into the break.
Benedictine University at Springfield was able to break through with a goal in the 58th minute, but that would be as close as they could get, as William Woods scored the 4-1 victory.
The win is the fifth consecutive win for the Owls over BenU-Springfield, as WWU has never lost to the Lady Bulldogs.
William Woods returns to action on Wednesday as they take on Hannibal-LaGrange for an AMC contest. Kickoff from Firley Field is set for 5 p.m.
