FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team gets set to host American Midwest Conference (AMC) leader, Columbia College, as the team looks to capture its third conference win of the season, Wednesday night. Kickoff for this pivotal match-up is set for 5:00 p.m.
In the Owls (3-4-2; 2-0-2) last outing, the team fought a hard battle against Missouri Baptist University, as the team drew a 1-1 (2OT) tie, last Wednesday night.
WWU got on the board first, asÂ
Brittainy German laced the ball into the left corner of the goal, scoring her fourth goal of the year from teammateÂ
Rachel Meyer at the 8:19 mark, giving the Owls the early 1-0 lead.
The Spartans would hold WWU scoreless the rest of the half, despite being outshot seven to three and the Owls would go into the final frame with a one goal advantage.
Coming out of the second half, the score would remain the same until the 61
st minute, when Missouri Baptist's forward, Lauren Guerrero connected with teammate Mary Lee, scoring the equalizing goal and tying the game up at 1-1.
At the end of regulation, with the score all tied 1-1, it was off to overtime. The Owls would put the pressure on the Spartans, as the team outshot MBU 3-1 but despite the effort the team couldn't find the back of the net, so more extra time was needed in double overtime.
In the second OT, which was not the first time that 20:00 extra minutes were needed for the Owls this season, the team was outshot 4-0 and couldn't secure the game winning goal, as the AMC match-up concluded in a 1-1 (2OT) tie.
German, a St. Peters, Missouri native, lead the Owls offensively, as she recorded three shots and the only goal on the night, whileÂ
Jordan McNamara andÂ
Sarah Krispin both added three shots a piece in the match-up.
Brittany Griffin gave WWU a solid performance in the goal, as the sophomore collected six shots on the night and did not allow a goal in both overtimes to preserve the tie.
On the season, McNamara continues to lead the Owls in several categories, which include goals (six), shots (31), points (16), and assists (three). German, is second on the team in goals (four) and points (nine), whileÂ
Krispin has recorded three goals, which is third best on the team.
In last season's meeting with similar circumstances, WWU was looking to stay unbeaten in AMC play and was determined to knock Columbia College from first place in the AMC standings, however, despite the Owls effort, the team was defeated 3-0 by the Cougars. Â
The Cougars (4-4-1; 4-0 AMC) return two of the teams' offensive threats from last year, Kelly Ross and Tori Magaletta. The CC midfielder, Ross, recorded 11 goals on the season and was third on the team in shots (36). Magaletta, finished the 2013 season third in points (29) and collected 10 goals on the year. CC also returns
Flavia Rosado, in the net, who saw action in six games and collected seven saves in the 2013 season.
Columbia College is currently first in AMC standings with a 4-0 conference record and 4-4-1 overall record. In its last outing, the Cougars, defeated Benedictine University at Springfield 2-1. The team was led by Tiffany Weaver and Katelyn Palmer, as each scored a goal in the match-up and combined five of the teams' 17 shots.
Freshman, Laurie Frew leads CC offensively this season, as she has collected four goals and 27 shots. As fellow freshman teammate, Jordan Poire, leads the team in assists (five) and points (11). In the net, Rosado, has recorded 42 saves in 840:00 minutes of play on the year.
