Men's Basketball Looks For Second Win On Year Against Bellevue

Johnson, looks to build off double-double performance to guide Owls to a victory against BU
FULTON, Mo. - The William Woods University men's basketball team returns to action tomorrow, as the team hosts Bellevue University. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at Anderson Arena.

The non-conference match-up against the Bruins was originally scheduled for 7:00 p.m. but has been moved up to a 6:00 p.m. start.

The Owls (1-3) are coming off a 73-63 loss to Avila University earlier this week, as the team's second half comeback came up short in the late minutes of play. Despite having a double-double performance from forward DJ Johnson.

William Woods ended the night shooting a 50 percent from the field compared to Avila's 37 percent.  Although, the Eagles were able to collect 72 shots on the night compared to the Owls 46 and what else gave AU the advantage was its defensive pressure forcing WWU to commit 26 turnovers in the match-up.

Johnson led the William Woods offense, recording his first double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 18 points and 15 rebounds. Jarett Boss was the next Owl to score in double-figures and ended the night with 11 points, while Darrien Dickey contributed nine points. Klayton Kuschel and Alec Mulvihill ended the night with seven and eight points each.

On the season so far, the Owls are led by Johnson, who is averaging 12 points and 8 rebounds a game. Sophomore, Ryan Hill, is second on the team in scoring, with 10 ppg.

Last year the two teams meet up in the Hampton Inn Classic, as the Bruins defeated the Owls 106-72, after a rough first half shooting for WWU. The Owls shot 40 percent (11-for-27) in the first 20:00 minutes, however, Bellevue was on fire shooting 58 percent (18-for-31) from the field, including an astounding 64 percent (11-for-17) from the three point arc.

BU (4-0) is off to an undefeated start to the season, averaging 82 points a game, led by guard Taylor Young, who is averaging 19 points and 22 assists, while also pulling down four rebounds a game.

A couple of other Bruins to keep an eye on are forwards, Alex Worthen-Harris, Dimitri Chonis and guard Thomas Hammock, as the trio are all averaging 11 points per game. Worthen-Harris also leads the team in rebounds with 24 on the season so far.
