Box Score FULTON, Mo.—The William Woods men's basketball team suffered its sixth straight loss on Thursday night, as the Owls dropped a tough one against Lyon College, 84-54.
The Owls (6-19; 4-11 AMC), trailed the Scots 7-2 at the 16:38 mark, but then went cold from the floor over a nine minute span, as Lyon went on a 17-6 run and held a 24-8 advantage over WWU with seven minutes and 31 seconds remaining in first half.
Lyon (11-13; 10-4 AMC), maintained its double-digit lead the rest of the frame and headed to the locker room up 40-18 on the Owls.
William Woods shot 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from the floor through 20:00 minutes of play and they were led by
Matt Helle scoring six points, while the Scots couldn't miss, hitting 70 percent (14-of-20) of its shots and went a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line, thanks in large part to Devonte Young netting 12 points.
In the second half, WWU trailed 49-27 at the 13:36 mark, after
Dontre' Jenkins knocked in his two-pointer, but that would be as close as the Owls would get until the final horn sounded, as the Scots couldn't be slowed down on offense and they were able to go on for the 30-point victory.
William Woods shot 33.3 percent in the game, led by senior
Seth Thomas, totaling a team-high 11 points, while
Blake Burgess and
Dontre' Jenkins each added 10 on the evening.
The Scots ended the game shooting 64.9 percent from the floor, 75 percent from downtown and 87.1 percent from the free throw line. The team was paced by Riley Jenkins, finishing with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Jordan Layrock had another stellar game, scoring 18 points and added five boards, while Young contributed 17 points and Rickey Thomas added 13.
Both teams were busy at the free-throw line, as the Owls got to the stripe 23 times, making 17, while Lyon got to the line 31 times, including 26 alone in the second half and made 27 in the game.
The Owls will now travel to Missouri Baptist on Saturday afternoon and look to take the regular season series against the Spartans. Tip-off is set to start at 4:00 p.m.
