ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The William Woods University baseball team split an American Midwest Conference doubleheader against Harris-Stowe State University on Saturday afternoon.
William Woods (18-6, 7-4 AMC) lost game one 4-2, allowing Harris-Stowe (3-16, 1-10 AMC) to collect its first conference win since the 2012 season. The Owls were able to bounce back in game two, winning 16-5, to win the three-game series, 2-1.
Game One Recap
William Woods collected eight hits in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, but could produce two runs as Harris-Stowe took an early 4-0 lead and held on to hand the Owls a 4-2 loss.
WWU was only able to collect one scoring inning - a two-run top of the sixth - in the seven inning affair, as they stranded nine of their 11 base runners on the afternoon.
For Harris-Stowe, they picked up a pair of runs in the second inning and then posted back-to-back scoring innings in the fourth and fifth innings. That would prove to be enough for HSSU, as they ended a 38-game regular season losing streak in AMC play.
The Hornets had not recorded a regular season conference win since April 17, 2012 when they swept a doubleheader against Williams Baptist. HSSU had to forfeit four conference games last season, pushing the streak to 38 games.
The duo of Danny Chambliss and Jose Osorio allowed just a combined two runs in seven innings to hand the Owls the loss. For Chambliss, he picked up his first win of the 2014 season after allowing two runs in five innings and striking out three along the way. Osorio was able to pick up his second save of the year by tossing two no-hit innings of baseball.
Dustin Kremer moved to 2-1 on the year with the loss. The righty allowed three runs, all earned, on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work. James Ball came in and tossed 2.1 of one-run ball and collected the lone strikeout of the day for William Woods.
The Owls had three players pick up multiply hits on the day, as Zach Nichols, Nick Spagnola, and Javier Ledesma each collected two hits in the loss. Sam Moon provided the lone run for WWU in game one with an RBI in the sixth for his lone hit of the day.
Game Two Recap
William Woods was able to plate 16 runs in game two of Saturday's doubleheader against Harris-Stowe to avenge game one's loss and take the weekend's three-game series, 2-1.
The Owls scored in all but three innings in game two as they were able to bounce back from an earlier loss in the day to come back home with a series victory thanks to the 16-5 win.
WWU posted back-to-back two-run innings to start the game, but Harris-Stowe tied the game at 4-4, after plating a run in the bottom of the third. William Woods scored seven unanswered runs in the next three innings, thanks to a pair of three-run innings in the fourth and sixth. The Hornets ended the streak in the bottom of the sixth with a run of their own, but the Owls scored five more times in the top of the ninth, giving them the 16-5 win.
Nick Spagnola paced WWU the offense, as the junior posted three hits in the win, as he went 3-for-5 at the plate, as he and Matt Thomas each collected three RBI on the day for William Woods.
The three-hit game two performance capped off a spectacular weekend for Spagnola, as the junior college transfer went 8-for-14 with a home run, a double, and seven RBI in the three-game series.
Cody Stewart and Austin Clapp also collected multi-hit games for WWU, as they pounded out two hits apiece. Stewart also drove in a pair of runs on the day, joining Spagnola as the only players to drive in more than one run in the 11-run win.
The Owls put on a clinic in the running game in the game two win, as they tied a season-high for stolen bases as a team with seven. Javier Ledesma and Clapp led the way for WWU with two swipes apiece.
John Cavness moved to 4-1 on the year, as he picked up the win after tossing 5.1 innings of 10-hit baseball. The lefty was a benefactor of the Owls offensive output, as he allowed a season-high five runs, all earned, but was still able to pick up the win.
Ryan Yuengel came out of the pen and tossed 3.2 innings of two-hit baseball to collect his first save at William Woods. The righty struck out a six batters in his second relief appearance for the Owls, the most since his Mar. 1 when he collected eight strikeouts on way to his only win of the 2014 season.
The Owls start a four-game week on Wednesday afternoon, as they travel to future AMC team, Lindenwood University-Belleville. This non-conference matchup is slated for a 12 p.m. start. WWU will return home on Friday afternoon, as they will open a three-game AMC weekend series against Lyon College with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
