FULTON, Mo. -- The William Woods University baseball team made a ninth inning rally, but was unable to pull even with Lyon College in the frame as they suffer an 8-4 loss in the final game of this weekend's American Midwest Conference three-game series.
William Woods (21-7, 9-5 AMC) had the tying run on deck with runners on second and third with one out, but were unable to get either runner home as Lyon College (18-16, 8-6 AMC) collected back-to-back strikeouts to secure its victory in game three of this weekend series. The Owls were still able to pick up the series win after Friday's doubleheader sweep, but the loss moves them one game behind Benedictine University at Springfield for third place in the conference.
WWU was able to outhit the Scots on Saturday by collecting 13 hits to Lyon's 12, but a trio of errors led to three unearned runs for LC. Austin Clapp and Cody Stewart each tallied three hits on the day as both player went 3-for-5 at the plate.
Sam Moon, Matt Thomas, and Zach Nichols each had a two-hit afternoon. The first six hitters in the William Woods' lineup posted all the team's hits on the day, as they went a combined 13-for-28.
Dustin Kremer suffered his second straight defeat by allowing five runs, four earned, in five innings of work. He is now 2-2 on the year with a 5.24 ERA.
The righty cruised through the first two innings, but found trouble getting out of the third, as Lyon College started the inning with a single and an error to get two runners on. After a sac bunt to move the runners over 90 feet, Joe Campbell smashed a triple to the centerfield wall to score both runners. Campbell scampered home on the next at-bat Griffin Glaude sac fly, making it 3-0 Lyon College.
Kremer got into another jam two innings later as the first two hitters reached base to start the fifth. The starter looked like he would be able to escape trouble after getting back-to-back infield groundouts, but Kevin Manzano collected a two-out single to drive in both runs to give his team a 5-0 lead.
William Woods got on the board in the bottom half of the fifth with a Matt Thomas RBI double to score Cody Stewart. Zach Nichols followed that hit with an RBI single, giving the Owls both runs back they allowed in the top of the frame.
Lyon College broke through with two more runs in the seventh inning, and another in the eight to take a commanding 8-2 lead.
The Owls would mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth as Sam Moon and Cody Stewart each reached base to start the frame. Matt Thomas drove them both in with an RBI single. Nichols followed with his second hit of the day, and Spagnola advanced both runners with a groundout to second base. WWU was unable to get the runners across, as Lyon College ended the game with consecutive strikeouts.
Brenden Camp picked up the win for the Scots by giving up four runs in eight innings. Camp went into the ninth inning, but was unable to get out of the inning as Trenton Coles came in and picked up the save.
William Woods returns to action on Tuesday night, as they host Park University for a nine inning AMC contest. Tuesday's game will be the conclusion of this year's three-game series between Park and WWU, as the Owls swept a doubleheader against the Pirates earlier this month in Parkville.
