Box Score 2 FULTON, Mo. ÂÂ-- The William Woods University baseball team ended the 2014 American Midwest Conference regular season by splitting a pair of 3-1 decisions on Saturday afternoon against Benedictine University at Springfield on Senior Day at Owls Field.
The split gave William Woods (35-10, 19-8 AMC) the win over Benedictine University at Springfield (22-16, 16-11 AMC) in this weekend's three-game series, and solidified the conference's third seed in next week's AMC Tournament.
BenU-Springfield starter Jordan Pesko cooled off the Owls offense in the first game of the day, as he allowed just one run on two hits, to help his team take a 3-1 win, and even up the series at a game apiece.
WWU was able to recover in the rubber game of the series, as they scored three times in the bottom of the third, which would end up being the lone runs of the game for the Owls, as they picked up a 3-1 win to take the series two games to one.
James Ball picked up his 12th save of the year in game three of the series, as he allowed two hits in 1.1 innings of work to tie Alex Cann's single-season record set back in 2012.
William Woods is now locked into the No. 3 seed in next weekend's AMC Tournament, which will start on Thursday in Springfield, Ill. The Owls will take on No. 6 seed Park University at 4 p.m.
Game One Recap
Jordan Pesko took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but allowed three straight hits in the frame to give William Woods it's only run of the day, as he limited the WWU offense to just two hit, helping the Bulldogs to take game two in the series, 3-1.
The senior made things extremely tough for Owls hitters on Saturday, as they had not collected a hit off of Pesko through six frames. Cody Stewart ended the no-hit bid in the sixth with a lead-off single. William Woods followed that up with a hit from Matt Thomas, and Nick Spagnola scored Stewart from third with a fielder's choice.
After Spagnola's RBI fielder's choice, lighting caused the game to go into a delay that lasted nearly two hours. Pesko would come back out to finish the frame, as he got Austin Clapp to hit into an inning-ending fielder's choice.
Pesko would come back out in the seventh inning, and the Owls would make a late rally as they got the tying run on base with two outs. The righty was able to work out of the game, as he retired Stewart for the final out of the game to pick up his sixth complete game victory on the year.
William Woods' starter John Cavness was the tough-luck loser in game two, as he allowed just three runs on five hits and struck out four in 5.2 innings. The lefty allowed a run in the top of the second, as Brandon Koishor brought in Travis Combs with a fielder's choice. He would later allow a sacrifice fly in the fifth and sixth innings.
The back-to-back hits by Stewart and Thomas were the lone hits that WWU picked up in game two.
Game Two Recap
William Woods scored three times in the bottom of the third, and that would prove to be all it needed in the rubber game of this weekend's three-game series, as the Owls bullpen helped the team collect a 3-1 victory and the series win.
Damon Adrian led the decisive frame off by reaching on an error, and would wind up on third base thanks to a Sam Moon single. Cody Stewart would follow Moon's single with an RBI double to score Adrian, and give WWU a 1-0 lead. After an out, Zach Nichols collected a clutch two-out single to score both Moon and Stewart and give William Woods a 3-0 advantage after three innings.
Owls starter Bubba Bradshaw was cruising through the Benedictine University at Springfield lineup, but an awkward landing on a throw in the third inning would limit him to just three plus innings, as Dylan Hastings came the top of the fourth and tossed 2.2 innings of shutout baseball to pick up the win.
The bullpen was yet against spectacular in the win for WWU, as they allowed just one run (a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning) on five hits and struck out six in six innings of work.
Closer James Ball entered the game with a runner on and two outs in the eighth inning, and would give up a two-out RBI single, which was charged to Ryan Schmidt, before closing out the game with three strikeouts to pick up his 12th save of the year. The save ties him with former NAIA All-American closer Alex Cann for the most saves in a single season in school history.
After being held to two hits in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the offense collected six hits, led by Nick Spagnola's two-hit performance. Sam Moon, Cody Stewart, Zach Nichols, and Austin Clapp each collect a hit in the win.
Connor Jacobs suffered the loss for BenU-Springfield, as the starter lasted four innings and gave up three runs, all earned, on five hits.
William Woods will wrap-up the 2014 regular season on Tuesday night, as they host Lincoln University for a nine-inning affair. The game from Owls Field is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
