SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The No. 3-seeded William Woods University baseball team used another strong offensive output on Friday night to collect a 13-4 over No. 2 seed Lyon College in the second round of the 2014 American Midwest Conference Tournament at Lanpheir Park.

William Woods (37-10, 19-8 AMC) scored its most runs since April 19, as the Owls offense collected 13 runs on 11 hits off of the Lyon College (34-17, 21-6 AMC) pitching staff to move on into the semifinals of the AMC Tournament to face No. 1-seeded Missouri Baptist on Saturday afternoon.

The top five hitters in the Owls offense provided most of the punch on the night, as they collected 10 of the team's 11 hits. Matt Thomas collected a team-high three hits in the win, while Cody Stewart, Zach Nichols, and Nick Spagnola each posted two-hit nights.

Nichols and Spagnola each drove in a team-best three RBI, as each player collected all three extra-base hits (Nichols double, Spagnola double and triple) in the nine-run victory.

Dustin Kremer provided WWU with its only other hit, as he collect a pinch-hit RBI single in the third inning.

The offensive output was more than enough for William Woods start John Cavness(7-2, 3.77 ERA), who tossed seven innings of six-hit, three-run ball to collect his seventh win in 11 starts. The lefty posted three strikeouts in the outing and did not walk a batter.

For the second straight outing, the WWU bullpen provided the team with a strong performance, as the combination of Ryan Schmidt and Ryan Schuermann allowed just one run on one hit in two innings of work.

Talan Roepcke (6-5, 4.83 ERA) suffered the loss for the Scots, as he allowed six runs, three earned, over 2.2 innings of work. He was the second straight starting pitcher to fall victim to the Owls hot-starting offense, as William Woods scored three runs the first and three more in the third as they chased Lyon's starting in the third frame.

Joe Campbell was the lone LC player to have multiple hits on the night, as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.

Zach Nichols got the scoring started for WWU in the bottom of the first, as he collected a one-out RBI single to score Cody Stewart. Nick Spagnola posted the biggest hit in the frame, as he had a one-out two-RBI triple to score both Matt Thomas and Nichols to give the Owls a 3-0 lead after its first at-bat.

Cavness kept the Scots bats at bay over the next three innings, as William Woods struck for three more runs in the third inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

The Owls offense wasn't done there, as they collected two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-0 lead entering the fifth.

Lyon College was finally able to get on the scoreboard in the fifth inning, as they added on three runs to cut its deficit to 8-3.

WWU responded with five runs over the next three innings, as the Scots was only able to scratch across one run, as the Owls advance to tomorrow's semifinal round with a nine-run win.

William Woods will take on top seed Missouri Baptist University tomorrow afternoon. First-pitch from Lanpheir Park is set for 4 p.m. The Owls took two of three from the Spartans at Owls Field earlier this season.
