Owls Can't Overcome Late Surge As They Fall 2-0 To Central Methodist

Griffin collected a season-high nine saves on the night
Box Score FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team fell victim to a pair of late goals on Tuesday night, as they suffered a 2-0 defeat against Central Methodist University, in a game that also saw a stoppage of play due to lighting.

Right after the starting lineups were announced, lighting struck, forcing the game time to be delayed for 45 minutes.

Both teams' came out of the delay very strong, as the Owls defense was able to hold Central Methodist University scoreless for the first half, but it didn't come easy, as the Eagles collected nine shots, while WWU was limited to one.

After being outshot in the first half, the Owls were more aggressive in the final frame as they put more pressure on the Eagles defense, however, still couldn't find the back of the net.

After 70 minutes of scoreless play, freshman, Abby Boyer, recorded her second assist on the year, as she connected with teammate Fernanda Ramirez, giving CMU the 1-0 lead.

The Eagles would then poke another goal into the net, as with less than a minute to play, senior Kelsey Vanzant, had a breakaway down the left side of the field and put her shot past WWU goaltender Brittany Griffin, which secured a 2-0 shutout win for CMU.

Sophomore goalkeeper, Brittany Griffin collected a season-high nine saves on the night, while the Owls defense prevented CMU leading scorer, Nicki Noreen (seven) from contributing in the game, as they limited her to only two shots.

"It was the best performance by the team yet this year," expressed head coach Randy Hall. "It is a shame to see it chalked up as a loss on the scoreboard, but I was impressed on how much we were able to sustain pressure and keep them pinned into their end of the field for a large amount of the game."

WWU women's soccer team will be able to look for its first win against Central Methodist University since 2008 and redemption of tonight's game, as a rematch is scheduled later on this season in Fayette, Missouri.

The Owls will return to play this Saturday afternoon, as the team travels to Batesville, Arkansas, to play its first American Midwest Conference (AMC) game of the year against Lyon College. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
