Owls In Seek Of Its First AMC Win Against Lyon College

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The William Woods University women's soccer team opens up its American Midwest Conference (AMC) part of its schedule against Lyon College on Saturday afternoon, as they head to Batesville, Arkansas for a 12 p.m. kick-off.

The Owls (1-3-0, 0-0-0 AMC), enter Saturday's game looking for its first AMC win after dropping a tough 2-0 decision against Central Methodist University on Tuesday night.

WWU defense was able to hold CMU scoreless for the first half, but it didn't come easy, as the Eagles collected nine shots, while the Owls were limited to one.

After being outshot in the first half, the Owls were more aggressive in the final frame as they put more pressure on the Eagles defense, however, still couldn't find the back of the net.

In the 71st minute of the game, freshman, Abby Boyer, recorded her second assist on the year, as she connected with teammate Fernanda Ramirez, giving CMU the 1-0 lead.

The Eagles would then poke another goal into the net, with less than a minute to play, senior Kelsey Vanzant, had a breakaway down the left side of the field and put her shot past WWU goaltender Brittany Griffin, which secured a 2-0 shutout win for CMU.

Sophomore goalkeeper, Griffin collected a season-high nine saves on the night, while the Owls defense prevented CMU leading scorer, Nicki Noreen (seven) from contributing in the game, as they limited her to only two shots.

On the season, Jordan McNamara leads the Owls in several categories, which include, goals (four), shots (14), and points (10), while also adding two assists. Sarah Krispin is second on the team in goals (two) and points (four), while Ashley Deckard is tied for the team lead in assists with McNamara.

The Owls and Scots met twice last season, once in the regular season and then again in the quarterfinals of the AMC post season tournament. In both outings, despite outshooting the Scots 24-21, the Owls suffered a 1-0 defeat in both games.

Lyon College (3-0; 1-0 AMC) returns top scorers Maria Alonzo and Monica Ayala from last year's squad, as both forwards ended the season with nine goals apiece. Senior goalkeeper, Stephanie Spiteri also returns in the net for the Scots, as she recorded 110 saves in 2013.

The Scots, this season, are currently 3-0 on the year, as they have outscored its opponents 12-4 during the process. In its last outing, the Scots defeated AMC newcomer Lindenwood-Belleville 5-2. The team was led by Jessica Souza, as she tallied a game-high three assists and one goal, while Anna Waldman totaled two goals.

Offensively, they are led by Mendocino Junior College transfer, Waldman, as she has tallied 17 shots and already recorded seven goals on the year. Souza and Ayala are second on the team in goals (two), while Souza leads the team in assists (five).

In net, Spiteri has played in 270:00 minutes, allowed four goals and made 21 saves, while earning a goals against average of 1.33.
