Women's Soccer Looks For A Key Home Win Against Park University

Griffin, Defensive Player of the Week, looks to help Owls record its first AMC win of the season
FULTON, Mo. – The William Woods University women's soccer team looks to bounce back to its winning ways on Wednesday night, as the Owls host Park University. Kick-off is set to start at 5:00 p.m at Firley Field.

"It is a very big game for us, especially following our result on Saturday against Lyon College," exclaims head coach Randy Hall.

The Owls (1-3-1) are coming off a tough 1-1 (2OT) draw in its American Midwest Conference (AMC) opener against Lyon College, despite outshooting the scots 17-7 Saturday afternoon.

The WWU offense was off to fast start, as senior Rachel Meyer connected with teammate Brittainy German at the 4:01 mark, giving the Owls an early 1-0 lead.

Registering shots in the first half for the Owls included, Jordan McNamara, Jamie Palermo, Haley Pipes, Brittainy German and Sarah Krispin.

Going into the final frame with a 1-0 advantage, the Owls sustained the offensive pressure, outshooting the scots 8-5, however, the team couldn't poke another goal past the Scots goaltender.

After the Owls led 1-0 for most of the match-up, the Scots leading scorer, Annie Waldman scored the equalizing goal at the 83rd mark from teammate Monica Ayala, tying the game up at 1-1.

At the end of regulation, with the score all tied at 1-1, it was off the overtime in Batesvile, Arkansas. The Owls would continue the offensive pressure, as the team recoded three shots, but the game remained tied, so more extra time was needed in double overtime.

In second OT, the Owls had one shot advantage, but despite the effort, the team couldn't score the game winner and after 110:00 minutes of play the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

McNamara led the Owls with five shots, Palermo contributed with four, while Krispin totaled three and the single Owls goal.

Defensive Player of the Week, goalkeeper, Brittany Griffin allowed one goal and made one save on the day.

On the season, McNamara leads the Owls in several categories, which include goals (four), shots (19) and points (10), while also adding two assists. Krispin and German are tied for second on the team in goals (two), while Ashley Deckard is tied for the team lead in assists with McNamara.

In last year's meeting, WWU outshot the Pirates 14-13 and recorded a clean sheet, as they collected a key AMC victory, winning 2-0 over Park.

"It has certainly been an up and down match-up in our previous meetings," said Hall. "They have some returning talent and I anticipate we will recognize some new players in the bunch tomorrow. With that being said, I look at it as a match-up that we believe we are favored from recent results."

Hall added, "If we play our best in tomorrow's game then Park will be working to keep up with us."

The Pirates (2-3; 0-0 AMC) returns both top scorers Shnell Briscoe (19) and Bridget Steiner (16) from last year's squad, as the seniors, ended the 2013 season combined for 35 of the teams' 66 goals. In the net, senior Alisha Hoskins, also returns for the Pirates, as she recorded 79 saves in 2013.

Park University, this season, are currently 2-3 on the year, as they open up its AMC portion of the schedule with William Woods. In its last outing, the Pirates fell 3-1 to Graceland University. The team was led by freshman Gabi Severns, who totaled three shots, while Steiner, scored her first goal on the season and tallied two shots.

Offensively, they are led by freshman Severns, as she has collected 13 shots and recorded two goals on the year. Steiner, is second on the team in goals with one, while leading the team in assists (two). In net, Hoskins has collected 25 saves and earned a goals against average of 2.00.

"If we achieve well within our team goals and finish our created opportunities, the result will very likely take care of itself in the manner we hope," expresses Hall. "Park has been at least the second seed in our conference tournament the past three years and we need a full three points from the game to have a high quality shot at the regular season championship."
